How dispiritingly apt it is in this cinematic universe of sequels and franchises that the picture chosen to open the world's most venerable film festival should be Tim Burton's follow-up to his 1988 hit Beetlejuice, long-awaited by just about nobody. Nobody I know, anyway. The 81st Venice Film Festival opened last night with an impressive cluster of stars on the red carpet, but the movie they were here to celebrate - Beetlejuice Beetlejuice - is not quite worthy of the honour.
EPHRAIM HARDCASTLE: Any Tories suggesting Sir Keir Starmer is too old should be careful... King Charles, 75, isn't a fan of age-related jokes as the oldest to take the throne

EPHRAIM HARDCASTLE: ToryParty imps suggesting that Sir Keir Starmer is over the hill should tread with caution. At 75, the King, the oldest person to take the throne, doesn't take kindly to age-related jokes, with all his PMs likely to be relative youngsters. It was different for his mother. Her first seven PMs were older than her and her last seven were younger. Number 9 Margaret Thatcher, 53, was the same age. Of the 57 PMs, 12 have been older than Starmer, 61, when they came to office for the first time, including Churchill (65), Attlee and Macmillan (both 62). The last sexagenarian to enter Downing Street was Labour's Callaghan (64) in 1976. A good omen for Keir?
