Jesse Phillip Margera (born August 28, 1978) is an American musician.
He is best known as the drummer of West Chester-based heavy metal band CKY, which he co-founded in 1997.
Prior to CKY, Margera performed in the band Foreign Objects with former CKY vocalist and guitarist Deron Miller, and he has since worked with Gnarkill, Viking Skull, The Company Band and Fuckface Unstoppable.
Early life
Margera was born on August 28, 1978 and raised in West Chester, Pennsylvania. He is the older brother of professional skateboarder and TV personality Bam Margera, alongside whom he is considered a founding member of the CKY crew, which worked on the video series of the same name. He chose to play the drums as he had two uncles who played the instrument, one of whom later worked as a drum technician on a CKY tour. His "biggest influence" was Led Zeppelin drummer John Bonham, but as a young musician he also took an interest in jazz drummers such as Elvin Jones.
Career
Margera first appeared in a band in 1991 or 1992. Soalroach, brother Bam and friend Ryan Dunn, was one of his first bands. Deron Miller, a future CKY singer and guitarist who attended high school, later formed Foreign Objects. (EP) The band's debut extended play (EP) Undiscovered Numbers & Colors, 1995. The pair, alongside bassist Ryan Bruni, performed under the name Oil soon after meeting guitarist Chad I Ginsburg (who then worked as an audio engineer) and changing the band's name to CKY. Margera recalled in a 2003 interview that the leading reason he joined CKY was Miller's guitar playing skills, particularly his ability to write "complex [guitar] riffs that are catchy."
Margera performed drums on all five of the band's studio albums and was credited with contributing to songwriting on Infiltrate•Destroy•Rebuild.
Margera was also a member of the CKY-related comedy group Gnarkill, formed in 2002, with Brandon DiCamillo on vocals, guitarist Rich Vose, and brother Bam on keyboards; he appeared on both studio albums: 2002's Gnarkill and 2006's Unkle Matt and the ShitBirdz.
Margera had joined English band Viking Skull in November 2006, replacing founding member Gordon Morrison. Margera, a guitarist who performed heavily with Morrison, admitted that he unwittingly contributed to the band's temporary breakup in 2006 after drinking heavily with the band on tour. In September 2007, Chad I Ginsburg, a CKY guitarist, recorded the album Chapter Two. Viking Skull and Ginsburg (this time as producer) collaborated together again on the follow-up album Doom, Gloom, Heartache & Whiskey, which was released in 2008 in the United States. The CKY partnership was extended even further, as Joe Frantz and Margera's brother Bam produced the music video for the song "Hair of the Dog."
In 2007, Margera formed The Company Band, a supergroup starring Clutch frontman Neil Fallon and Fireball Ministry frontman James Rota, in addition to his work with CKY and Viking Skull. Both of the bands performed with one another between 2005 and 2006, during which the band began jamming together and eventually formed a formal band. With the addition of guitarist Dave Bone and bassist Jason Diamond, the band recorded its debut EP Sign Here, Here, and Here with producer Andrew Alekel and released it later this year. The band made its full debut in 2009 and then renamed The Company Band in November of the year. In 2012, Pros & Conscious, another EP, was released.
In 2011, the fate of CKY was put into question; each member of the band discussed their hopes for the band's future; however, Ginsburg wanted to record solo albums, while the guitarist preferred releasing another CKY album. Miller later claimed that Ginsburg had left the band, while Margera attempted to calm the situation by claiming that Miller had alcohol use issues and that he needed "assistance... not insult[s]" and that he wanted "help... not insult[s]. Margera, along with Ginsburg and bassist Matt "Matty J" Janaitis, returned to CKY in 2012 with Year Long Disaster frontman Daniel Davies in place of Miller. This lineup (with Matt Deis in place of Janaitis) was reunited in 2015 after another split with Miller. After appearing on the singer's solo album, Margera claims that Davies invited him to join the band during a phone call with the drummer.
Margera also appears on drums in brother Bam's band Fuckface Unstoppable, and she has appeared on both studio albums: Stórfréttir Reykjavk and Fuckface Unstoppable.
The Phoenix, the fifth CKY album, was released on June 16, 2017.
Jess and Ginsburg are currently working on a new CKY album.
