Triple J Trucking owner Jerry Johnson, who brought the money during a stop at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in August 2020, has a lawsuit that has been dismissed in complete for what he described as "false allegations" by the force, who recovered the money during a stop at Triple J Trucking. Johnson, the owner and operator of his Charlotte-based company, has argued that seizure was unlawful because he had saved the money to buy a new semi-truck. Confident he'd find a deal at an auction in Phoenix, California, Johnson jumped from Charlotte to the Arizona city, but detectives soon caught him in a jam, but detectives who questioned him about the perfectly legal haul were determined to block his flow. The lawsuit claims that investigators became adamant that Johnson, a middle-aged black man, was involved in laundering the money as part of a regulated drug trade. Eventually, under the threat of capture and further interrogation, Johnson collaborated with detectives by forkling over the $39,500. The Phoenix Police Department, led by Brian Sullivan, has since declined to return the money, despite their determination that the credentialed North Carolinian was up to no good. The force has yet to comment on the situation outside of the state's arguments.
