Early life
Donovan was born in the middle of three boys to Nancy Matthews (1946-2010); his older brother was Michael Donovan (c. 1965 – 2010), and his younger brother is Sean (born 1970). Since their father abandoned the household, Donovan's mother raised her sons alone on welfare. They migrated a number of times before settling in Amesbury, Massachusetts.
Donovan was mentored by a teacher who helped him start a drama club and obtain a private scholarship, enabling him to enroll in a summer program that helped him start his acting career. He attended Bridgewater State College before going to Amherst, Massachusetts, where he earned a Bachelor of Arts in drama.
Donovan, a student at UMass Transit Service, was a commercial bus driver on UMass Transit Service, where he operated passenger buses as part of the PVTA. He went on to complete his Master of Fine Arts at the Tisch School of the Arts in New York City.
Personal life
Donovan has more than 20 years in martial arts. He earned his black belt in Shotokan karate in college and competed throughout the state. Later, he studied aikido for more than six years and Brazilian jiujitsu.
Donovan, a Boston Red Sox baseball fan since childhood, threw the ceremonial first pitch at the game between the Red Sox and the Seattle Mariners on July 3, 2009. He tossled the ceremonial first pitch at Fenway Park on July 3, 2010, this time in a game between the Red Sox and the Baltimore Orioles.
Donovan married Michelle Woods on August 25, 2012. They had a daughter in December of this year. Donovan and his wife welcomed their second child, a boy, in 2014. They had their third child, a daughter, in 2017. They have four children all together, although they don't know it.
Career
Donovan has appeared in many television shows, including CSI: Miami, Spin City, Monk, Millennium, Witchblade, The Pretender, and Law & Order. Donovan played Dr. Sloan, the antihero in the short-lived TV series Threshold. In Crossing Jordan, Donovan also played William Ivers. On the USA Network, he was the first leading actor in the American remake of the British television show Touching Evil with Vera Farmiga in 2004.
Donovan appeared in Burn Notice from 2007 to 2013, as Michael Westen, a spy who was likely killed by the CIA or Homeland Security for reasons unknown to him, and marooned in Miami, Florida. Westen is followed on the show as he continues to find out why he was dismissed and re-establish his career as a clandestine intelligence agent, in lieu of bringing justice to the people of Miami. Donovan made his directorial debut with the series's episode "Made Man," which premiered on June 17, 2010. Burn Notice: The Fall of Sam Axe, Donovan's second sequel, first broadcast on USA Network on April 17, 2011. The series spanned seven seasons, received raves from both audiences and critics, and was nominated for four Primetime Emmy Awards.
Donovan appeared on Fargo as North Dakota mobster Dodd Gerhardt in 2015. In 2016, Charlie Haverford, a Tarot-reading con artist, debuted in Shut Eye on Hulu. Shut Eye was cancelled after two seasons on January 30, 2018.
