America's largest archdiocese has agreed to pay a record-breaking $880million to more than 1,000 people who have claimed to be sexually abused as children by clergy members. That represents the largest single payout by any diocese in the United States, though victims argue more should still be done. They have alleged that church leaders knew about the abuse, but refused to alert law enforcement.

The Chapter 11 protection was filed on Tuesday, as had the case with the recent filings by Oakland and Santa Rosa's nearby dioceses of Oakland and Santa Rosa, seeking to shield the church district from several hundred civil lawsuits that have been broadcast against it. Both suspect child sexual assault by certain church leaders, and more than 500 people are currently in civil proceedings court. The district's archbishop denied the charges on Tuesday, citing the fact that'many occurred 30 or more years ago.' All were lodged following the enactment of a state law in 2019, which extended the statute of limitations for civil claims in sex harassment cases for many years.
