After what feels like an eternity, the Premier League is finally back and regular football can once again reign supreme.  Yes, there was a whole European Championship - and even the Olympic competition - over what was in truth a jam-packed summer of sport, but the top-flight is a different beast entirely.  As such, with the season curtain-raiser between Manchester Untied and Fulham set for Friday night, which you can follow with Mail Sport's live coverage, it is time to get back into the Premier League mood ahead of the game. 

Burnley have confirmed the release of two players following the expiration of their contracts this summer. The Clarets will be playing their football in the Championship after being relegated from the Premier League, finishing 19th.

Burnley's Boxing Day match against Liverpool will feature Jay Rodriguez. The two clubs are at opposite ends of the Premier League table, but 34-year-old Rodriguez has scored against three different clubs and has aided Southampton in defeating Jurgen Klopp's side in the 2017 Carabao Cup final. He has been on the winning team against them five times, as many times as he has lost.

On boss Vincent Kompany, the pressure was eased.

BURNLEY 1-2 WHICH HAM ADAM SHERGOLD AT TURF MOOR: Burnley's pathetic start to the season at Turf Moor was heartbreaking, but West Ham's tumbling and grab victory here was particularly cruel. His side has dominated Tottenham and Chelsea here, and more than matched Manchester United. They were clearly superior for 80 minutes, and they were clearly on target for their first home victory since returning to Premier League form. However, they also lost, somehow. They made their seventh home revival this season, when they stood below penalized Everton at the bottom of the table, despite having a poor record.

The Bournemouth midfielder's spectacular 35-yard lob smuggish Burnley to their eighth loss of the season and the Cherries' first Premier League victory of the season, but a historic five-minute VAR check put the game to a good start. Both of these teams are strong candidates for relegation this season, and for good reason. Bournemouth had failed to win any of their nine league matches leading up to Saturday's matchup, but Burnley's nascent Championship triumphs faded rapidly. On the rain-battered south coast, however, at least there was a fight between two dogged teams determined to prevent the sinking.

When he got to the end of Nathan Redmond's pass and shot home 88 minutes in, the Burnley forward thought he had levelled up. He was first found offside until VAR announced that he was onside, but after the final investigation revealed that he was not offside all along, he was onside.

Despite both teams' poor form, Thomas Frank's side is a strong favorite with Sky Bet at 3/4 to win at home, while the Clarets are 18/5. With odds of 11/4, a draw is the second best-backed in the market. 'Bryan Mbeumo and Lyle Foster all scored', Sky Bet's 'Price Boosts', has been raised to 11/1, and 'Brentford's win 3-1' has been up from 12/1 to 14/1. Luton's Elijah Adbeayo and Saturday's goalscorer Carlton Morris are the favorites, with the pair shootings of 1+1, 2+, 3+, or 4+ on target respectively. In comparison, the visiting Clarets are mainly concerned about Zeki Amdouni and Jay Rodriguez, who have three or more shots on target, although Rodriguez is marginally larger at 11/2. Amdouni has been particularly offensive in front of goal this season, with the Swiss prospect scoring up five shots on target to date.

At odds of 6/5 and 11/10 to score at any time, Jay Rodriguez and Zeki Amdouni are the best-backed, with 4/1 respectively scoring the opener. Rodriguez has yet to find the back of the net this season, while Amdouni has bagged two in all competitions this season. However, Salford City have joint-favourites to score at any time, with Callum Hendry and Matt Smith as the best-backed at 7/2. In addition, they're receiving a scoresheet first at 11/1. Josh Brownhill, a third of the country's best, is 9/2 to find the back of the net at any point, and 12/1 to finish first. In Burnley's 5/2 loss to Tottenham a few weeks back, Brownhill scored a goal in stoppage time.

Burnley has bought 13 players this summer, and all of the Clarets starters yesterday, bar one, were signed by the Belgian in the last 14 months, with veteran quartet Josh Brownhill, Jack Cork, Jay Rodriguez, and Johann Berg Gudmundsson as substitutes. Naturally, there was a lack of cohesion, but Kompany insists that his squad will get used to the required level in the Premier League as quickly as possible, despite the fact that Burnley have lost their first two games, both at Turf Moor and elsewhere.

Rasmus Hojlund (left) is expected to make his much-anticipated Manchester United debut this weekend. The Dane, 20, was moved from Atalanta's Serie A side Atalanta to Old Trafford in July for £72 million worth add-ons. However, he sustained a back injury when he arrived and has therefore been unable to make his United debut so far. Erik ten Hag's men have failed in attack in the first two games, beating Wolves 1-0 and losing 2-0 against Tottenham.

Burnley has confirmed the signing of Lyle Foster, a Westerlo striker, for around £12 million, plus bonuses. The Championship leaders have scored 55 goals in their 28 matches to date, but they are hoping to add more firepower to their game. Foster has scored eight goals in 21 league appearances in Belgium this season, and is about to move to Turf Moor. The 22-year-old will give boss Vincent Kompany another shot up front, and it appears he is likely to face veteran duo Jay Rodriguez and Ashley Barnes for a starting position.

Jay Rodriguez's penalty against Norwich sent Burnley to the top of the Championship table for his eighth goal of the season. Grant Hanley blocked Manuel Benson's cross with his elbow with just eight minutes remaining, and Norwich held out for their second straight draw to put an end to their slide. With eight games without a win and just one point from the previous five games, the Canaries remain in play-off positions.

IAN HERBERT AT TURF MOOR: They can't quite get out of Turf Moor's narrow streets. Nonetheless, the Dychian creed was emblazoned on the programme's huts outside: "Legs, hearts, and minds." It was one thing to defenestrate the man, but it was another to replace him with something diametrically different. Vincent Kompany, his successor, has stifled Route One and replaced it with what he knows: a scenic, patient, and fast route to the goal.

IAN HERBERT AT TURF MOOR: For Vincent Kompany, it was somewhere between brave and foolish to stake his professional image on Burnley this summer. To help settle a £60 million loan that fell on their owners as a result of relegation from the Premier League, the club was releasing all its best players and ending up spending £40 million less than they did in the window. Kompany's win last night, which saw the team win a fourth game, was a testament to his ability to completely rebuild and introduce a dedication to passing, which, with all respect to Sean Dyche, has been missing in these parts. Manuel Benson, a Dutch Chelsea loanee, and Ian Maatsen joined Royal Antwerp for £3.6 million to join Burnley's new Belgian enclave, showing that the new boss's ability to find class on no budget. Route one has departed, and it has been followed by a more direct, often over-elaborate route, with wingers wrangling the flanks and passing sequences, which on this occasion were of the highest order.

Vincent Kompany's side, who have started the season on a high note, seemed to be on the right track throughout, but goalkeeper David Button's late equalizer ensured the Midlands retained a point.

Traumatic does not do justice to Oli McBurnie's struggles over the past two years, but a new season has brought the striker's life back to him. The Scotland international, who arrived from Swansea three summers ago, has only scored two goals in as many seasons. With a superb first-half header last night, he scored his second in as many games. Paul Heckingbottom's men leapt ahead of Reading into first place, with defender Anel Ahemdzic leading a spectacular second-half double to sandwich an Iliman Ndiaye's clinical attack.

CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND-UP: Dean Smith's days at Carrow Road may have been counted down and with only a single point from Norwich's first three matches. Norwich had been promoted the previous two times they had played at this level before, and the club was widely expected to do so again this season. But after a weak last term and a rocky start in the second tier, followers' patience was wearing thin, and this match seemed to be a must-win.
