The Swans lost on August 27th, 2011 in their first match since the tragedy, knocking Geelong off its home ground, where it had not lost in 1462 days. It was Sydney's first victory in more than a decade. In the game, Sydney and Geelong players wore black armbands as a mark of respect for their departed co-captain Jarrad McVeigh and his wife Clementine.' The Swans' win was regarded as a tribute to McVeigh and his daughter.
Mark McVeigh of Essendon, Jarrad's older brother who had a baby girl earlier this year, 'blowing a kiss to the heavens' following his team's dramatic seven-point victory over Port Adelaide in the same round. In their match in honor of Mark's niece, Essendon's players also wore black armbands.

AFL career
In the Swans' humiliating loss to triple-defending premiers, the Brisbane Lions, in Round 1 of the 2004 season, McVeigh made his AFL debut wearing guernsey number 3.
McVeigh transitioned from a tagger to a goal-kicking midfielder after winning the Swans Most Improved Award from the 2007 season. He scored a career-high 6 goals against the Western Bulldogs in round 18, 2008.
McVeigh earned his first Bob Skilton Medal as the Swans Best and Fairest in the round-18 battle against the Western Bulldogs, winning 578 votes, 10 points in front of runner-up Brett Kirk. McVeigh had a less fruitful year in 2009, missing some games due to a hamstring injury and placing sixth in the Best and Fairest awards.
McVeigh finished fourth in the Bob Skilton Medal in 2010. He was selected in the International Rules squad for the tour to Ireland in October.
McVeigh was appointed co-captain of the Sydney Swans in 2011 alongside Adam Goodes. Luella's death marred his season. Despite such sadness, he finished 10th in the 2011 Skilton Medal. McVeigh captained the Sydney Swans to the 2012 premiership in 2012. His good year was rewarded with a fifth-place finish in the 2012 Bob Skilton Medal. McVeigh became the seventh person to play 250 games for the Swans in round 7.
McVeigh, a footballer from McVeigh, announced on August 1st that he would retire at the end of the 2019 AFL season.
