Jan Smeterlin Life

Jan Smeterlin (7 February 1892 in Bielsko, Austro-Hungarian Empire; 18 January 1967 in London) was a Polish concert pianist.

He is best known as an interpreter for Frédéric Chopin and Karol Szymanowski.

Life

Hans Schmetterling was born in January Smeterlin. Dr. Julius Schmetterling, a lawyer and board member of the Jewish Religious Community in Bielsko, was a member of the German assimilation party; his mother Amalia was also from the household (they were first cousins). The Schmetterlings arrived in Bielsko, Galicia, from Grzyma. He gave concerts until 1923, before being identified in the press as Jan Smeterling. He began using the word Jan Smeterlin in 1924.

Smeterlin appeared in his first concert at age seven, but despite being gifted in his youth, he was forced to study law. While attending in Vienna, he received a scholarship to study with pianist Leopold Godowsky. Godowsky was supposed to be one of Smeterlin's most influential educators. In 1920, Smeterlin made his professional debut.

Smeterlin was a foodie and he wrote a posthumously published book of recipes. Smeterlin and Didi, his wife's husband, lived in New York City in his later years. Smeterlin died just after the couple returned to London in 1967.
