A lone woman is walking down the street, the tap-tapping of her high heels the only sound - until she becomes aware of someone else's footsteps. They're behind her, picking up speed. She's alarmed and runs away... If this cliche scene sounds familiar, it's because we've all seen it in film and television dramas, often as a prelude to a grisly murder. It's for a good reason. It taps into one of our deepest fears, a violent attack by a stranger, just as we're scrambling to ensure our own security. Well, first and foremost, let me assure you that these kinds of murders are extremely unusual. In fact, you're much more likely to be killed in your own home's'safety'. Particularly if you're a woman. In short, 'Home sweet home' is the country's most popular murder site, and the figures are doggedly persistent, dating back to the beginning of history. Between 2017 and 2019, three quarters of female victims and four out of every ten male victims in England and Wales were killed at home, many by someone they knew. The figures for Scotland have risen: from 2010 to 2020, it was 83 percent of all female murder victims and 55% of male victims. The overwhelming majority of the murders were male.
