The photograph was taken by a recently launched US space agency satellite NOAA-21, which experts believe will reveal crucial data about our planet's oceans, atmosphere, and land. The Earth-observing spacecraft's Visible Infrared Imaging Radiometer Suite (VIIRS), which began gathering data at the start of December and created a mosaic of frames over the course of 24 hours, is the same instrument used by the Eye-Observation Spacecraft. (bottom right) It snapped all manner of characteristics, including the snow-capped Himalayas, the blue hue of the Caribbean Sea (bottom right), and the haze and smog caused by agricultural burning in northern India.
