Olympic hero Sir Chris Hoy kept his terminal cancer diagnosis a secret for a year as he underwent chemotherapy that left him 'absolutely broken', he has revealed. The cycling legend revealed on Sunday that he has two to four years to live after doctors discovered a tumour last year. A second scan found the primary cancer in his prostate, which had metastasised to his bones, with tumours in his shoulder, pelvis, hip, spine and rib. JEFF POWELL: Critics of the Athens 2004 Olympics were expecting 'a building site Games' but Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki ensured that Greece produced a modern miracle

www.dailymail.co.uk, July 25, 2024
JEFF POWELL: It was 3am of a moonlit night in Athens, just one week before the opening ceremony for the 2004 Summer Games, as the First Lady of the Olympics put on a hard hat and set out to spur on construction workers as they raced to beat that deadline. This was by no means the first - nor the last - of the many times Gianna Angelopoulos-Daskalaki delivered flasks of coffee and her patriotic message to men and women working around the clock to deliver what a mocking world was calling 'impossibly Greek.' Her objective on this particular occasion was to inspire a sprint finish to completion of the new Tram line, which would carry the crowds from the city centre to the Olympic Stadium. The track was still a kilometre or so short of the final stop, which itself was not quite finished.

The Tory leader withdrew from the planned event on the day pollsters predicted that he would become the first sitting Prime Minister to lose his seat. He was supposed to be campaigning to help former Olympic rower James Cracknell (right) win votes in Colchester, Essex. But local Tories were told on the day that Mr Sunak was pulling out. An insider said the change of plans was a 'knee-jerk reaction' to fears that even the PM's seat in North Yorkshire could be lost amid a Tory wipeout. 'It was all planned well in advance,' the source said, adding that the change of plan was 'because of the polls'. Colchester was previously held by Tory Will Quince, who won a 9,423 majority in 2019.

It is like Rorke's Drift out here,' says one Tory candidate in what should be a safe seat in the Home Counties. The candidate is defending a majority of close to 25,000 votes: in any other election , even 1997, it would be a banker seat for Tory HQ.

'The King is upstairs, would you like to see him?' TV presenter Beverley Turner was given sneak peak of Charles' portrait by artist Jonathan Yeo... before His Majesty saw it!

www.dailymail.co.uk, May 16, 2024
When King Charles unveiled his unconventional new portrait this week, he naturally thought he was the first person to set eyes on it. But he was wrong. It now emerges that Jonathan Yeo, the artist behind Charles' fiery red portrait, privately showed it off to his TV presenter friend Beverley Turner first when she visited his London home for dinner with his wife, actress Shebah Ronay. Amazingly, given she hosts a daily news TV show, Bev kept the details under wraps. But once the portrait was unveiled she spilled the secrets behind the portrait, which was commissioned in 2020 to celebrate the then Prince of Wales's 50 years as a member of The Drapers' Company in 2022. Bev, the ex-wife of Olympic rower James Cracknell, told viewers on Wednesday: 'I was with Johnny and his wife a couple of weeks ago, and she said, "the King is upstairs. Would you like to see him" … we went upstairs and there is the painting.

www.dailymail.co.uk, May 15, 2024
Ex-Olympic rower James Cracknell, who was one of the cyclists leading the runners, said he had to make a sharp turn when the marshal directed him towards what turned out to be the wrong way. The 'mystery' marshall - wearing a high-vis vest - directed runners in the wrong direction at the start of the race in Colchester, Essex, on Sunday. Cyclists were guiding the runners along the first junction of the course when the person dressed in high-vis stepped forward. The runners were eventually led back onto the correct route but now race organisers are appealing to England Athletics to determine whether the 867 finishers have a legitimate time.

www.dailymail.co.uk, September 27, 2023
Britain could return to the European Union in a decade's time, according to ex-Olympic rower James Cracknell, who is now aspiring to become a Tory MP.' The 51-year-old explained how the aging of Brexit voters could result in a generational change in public opinion and majority support for re-entering the Brussels-based bloc. Mr Cracknell, a double Olympic gold medalist, was voted the Conservative nominee in Colchester this week for the next general election. He will continue to hold the Essex constituency in Conservative hands and replace current health minister Will Quince, who is standing down, as the local MP. Mr Cracknell said in an interview with the Telegraph that he would not support the UK's return to the EU now, and that the country must'make the most' of its post-Brexit freedoms. He also wondered what terms Britain would receive from Brussels if it attempted to return to the near future by starting fresh talks with the bloc. However, when considering the possibility of the UK resuming EU membership, he continued: "If that were to happen, it would be when the 18-25s, 18-30s, who voted largely Remain become older." A majority of those over the age of 50 voted for Brexit, with some suggesting that it could be delayed a decade.' We made the decision, but we have to protect ourselves.'

As GB News' host Andrew Pierce and Bev Turner's feud over the Russell Brand controversy goes off air, he's been 'overwhelmed' with emails after he begged for calling comedian a 'hero.'

www.dailymail.co.uk, September 19, 2023
Since clashing in a tense on-air dispute yesterday, Andrew Pierce and Beverley Turner have resumed their feud over the raging Russell Brand controversy. After being asked by his co-host for calling the comedian a 'hero' in the aftermath of rape, sexual assault, and bullying allegations, the GB News columnist and Daily Mail columnist said he had been 'overwhelmed' with messages of support. Brand raped a woman in his LA home, assaulted two others, and groomed a 16-year-old teen from 2006 to 2013, according to The Times, The Sunday Times and Channel 4's Dispatches. The Met Police said on Monday that they had received a suspicion of sexual harassment against Brand, which occurred in London's Soho district in 2003. The hosts' public spat continued an hour after Pierce branded Turner'shameful' for defending Brand in a tense debate live on air. Others devolved, including James Cracknell's wife who took a brief swipe at Turner's GB News host-ex partner.

Jordan Cracknell's wife takes a thinly dismissed jab at Russell Brand's ex-gynistic backlash against him, saying, "one only has to look at Twitter."

www.dailymail.co.uk, September 18, 2023
Brand, a comedian and actor who was born in 2006 and 2013, has been accused of rape and sexual assaults between 2006 and 2013, when he was at the peak of his fame and worked for the BBC and Channel 4. Jordan Cracknell (left with her husband James Cracknell), James Cracknell's new wife after her divorce from ex-wife Beverley Turner (right) in 2019, took to Instagram to share her thoughts on Brand's allegations (inset). This comes after Andrew Pierce and his GB News co-host Ms Turner erupted on air today after she called Brand "a hero" on Twitter. Afterward, Mrs Cracknell wrote: "My heart goes out to the brave women who came forward with their Russell Brand stories." The allegations are stomach churning. I'm sure it wasn't easy, and the misogynistic backlash in those situations is ferocious (one only has to look at Twitter). They are the heroes of all this.'

I live with the shame of being a divorced working mother, according to BEVERLEY TURNER, who also dropped from a top sportsman

www.dailymail.co.uk, August 22, 2023
BEVERLEY TURNER: As Helen Skelton sacrificed her BBC Radio 5 Live Sunday morning show on the altar of motherhood earlier this month, she felt a pang of understanding. The juggle is real,' the mother of three children, who separated from England rugby league player Richie Myler more than a year ago, informs listeners. I'm not positive about it.' . ... However, you should know that some must survive.' I feel for her because, although I am divorced from a top sportsman, James Cracknell, is also divorced, and although my new spouse is incredibly supportive, the burden of childcare - even though maintaining my own income and daily GB News TV and radio show remains high. It's less a 'juggle' and more a blindfolded, high-wire, triple-somersault circus act.

James Cracknell, 50, said he would be 'honoured' to serve in any capacity, but that the Oxfordshire town has 'a special place in my heart.' The double Olympic gold medalist, pictured, has been playing for Henley since age 18, and is a member of the town's prestigious Leander Rowing Club. Cracknell said it would be a "humbling privilege" to represent Henley, and he would seek votes from local residents. 'I rowed there from the time I was 18, bought my first house in the town, and had my first child when I lived there,' he told The Sunday Telegraph.'
