College career
In 2016, Hurts played for the Alabama Crimson Tide football team as the starting quarterback for the first time. Blake Barnett started the first game against the Trojans, but Hurts took over the starting role by the second game, becoming the first true freshman to start at quarterback for Alabama in 32 years (Vince Sutton in 1984). Under new head coach Nick Saban, the Hurts had a record-breaking freshman season. With nine interceptions, he threw for 2,780 yards and 23 touchdowns. In the second round of the 2020 NFL Draft, the Philadelphia Eagles selected Hurts 53rd overall. He was originally named as the third string quarterback behind Nate Sudfeld in Week 2, mainly because he could be used for quarterbacking games or as a decoy. Carson Wentz, who had been suspended due to ineffective play against the Green Bay Packers, was released on December 6, 2020. Hurts threw his first passing touchdown to Greg Ward in Week 13 and finished the game with 109 passing yards, a touchdown, and an interception. Hurts was dubbed the starter for the New Orleans Saints' Week 14 game on December 8, 2020. Hurts led the Eagles to a 24–21 victory in his first NFL appearance.
