Many years ago, a teenager called Gavin Hopley was brutally murdered in a part of Oldham reputed to be a 'no-go zone' for white people. Jacob Rothschild (pictured), who died on Monday at the age of 87, was a hero in the city who ruled the Square Mile for many decades. He began working at NM Rothschild in 1963 and died 17 years later after losing out with his cousin Sir Evelyn de Rothschild over a merger with rival SG Warburg.

Miss AHE Seymour's Victorian diary, Balls & My Partners, was one of 343 lots sold last week by Lay's Auctioneers, Penzance, Cornwall, raising more than £250,000 for renowned antiques collector Peter Hone. Sir Evelyn de Rothschild (pictured with wife Lynn) who died peacefully at home at the age of 91, was Anthony de Rothschild's only son and Yvonne Cahen d'Anvers'. In 1957, Harrow earned his first degree in Economics at Trinity College Cambridge, and later joined the family bank. His time there spanned more than four decades. The bank's total debt increased from £40 million to £4.6 billion under his stewardship.
