Wildlife campaigners have urged beachgoers to allow seals to rest peacefully after crowds surrounded one of the mammals. Beachgoers are being asked to keep their distance following reports of people gathering too close to the mammals sunbathing. The warning comes after Weymouth Powerboat Training shared images showing a 'ridiculous' number of people crowded around a lonesome seal at Durdle Door in Dorset.

Despite reportedly alerting citizens of the public not to stay away from the mammal, a Dorset police officer has been put under fire after posing for a photograph with a 'protected' seal on a beach. After reports that a seal was nesting on the beach at the popular beach spot and attracting a crowd of onlookers, officers toured Durdle Door in Dorset. They erected a cordon around the nesting mammal to protect the adult seal, with one officer taking the opportunity to snap a selfie in front of the sea creature. As the prominent limestone arch is visible in the background, the policeman can be seen standing some feet away from the seal and smiling. However, the image quickly gained traction online, sparking a flurry of mixed reactions and heated debate from the public
