After selecting Tom Hartley and Shoaib Bashir in their squad for next month's series, England will bring two uncapped and inexperienced spinners into the heat of a Test tour of India. As first reported by Mail Sport in September, the pair are part of a 16-man squad named today by Rob Key for a critical five-Test series, as well as a third player uncapped at Test level in quick bowler Gus Atkinson. It is the pick of Lancashire's Hartley and, in particular, Somerset rookie Bashir, that will be coveted, with England looking to find new spinners to join England's veteran fit-again Jack Leach and Rewinding Legspinner Rehan Ahmed on India's turning pitches.

After ill-discipline snared Sussex Sussex a 12-point deduction that appears to have destroyed the company's hopes of promotion from LV= Insurance County Championship Division Two, Jack Carson has admitted 'crossing the line.' Following last week's victory over Leicestershire, Carson, the highly rated England Lions spinner who could be in contention for next year's Test tour of India, was issued with a level-two fixed penalty breach by the match referee. Footage from the match shows a potential assault on opposition batter Ben Cox at the bowler's end may have been the reason, although teammate Tom Haines was slapped with a more minor level-one offence.

PAUL NEWMAN: England are in a pickle over choosing a spin twin for Jack Leach

During the Trent Bridge Test against New Zealand earlier this summer, Moeen, in particular, seemed to be ecstatic and that his game is so well suited to the Ben Stokes-McCullum experiment. It now seems unlikely, alas. Rashid was never a serious candidate because he doesn't have his heart (or shoulder) in red-ball cricket, but it was disappointing to see Moeen downplay his enthusiasm in traveling for the three-Test tour in December.
