Iván Fischer (born 20 January 1951) is a Hungarian conductor and composer. Fischer, who was born in Budapest into a musical family of Jewish origins, began studying piano, violin, cello, and composition in Budapest.
Dám Fischer, his older brother, became a conductor in his own right.
He travelled to Vienna later to study cello and early music with Hans Swarowsky at the University of Music and Performing Arts, where he also studied cello and early music, as well as working as an assistant to Nikolaus Harnoncourt.
He studied with Franco Ferrara at the Accademia Musicale Chigiana in Siena. Fischer was crowned president of the Rupert Foundation in London in 1976.
He began to guest-conduct such British orchestras as the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic, the BBC Symphony, and the London Symphony Orchestra, with whom he made a world tour in 1982.
