Iris Chacon Career

Career

Chacón has been known by several names, including "La Bomba de Puerto Rico" (The Puerto Rican Bombshell) and "La Vedette de América" (America's Showgirl). She toured the majority of Latin America, Europe, and Japan during her 1970s and 1980s heyday. In addition, she appeared in two films and several telenovelas, including Yo Sé Que Menta.

AMCAR, Inc. recruited her in 1982 for a television commercial promoting Amalie Oil Company automotive coolant products, making it one of Puerto Rico's most popular television commercials ever. The media surrounding the commercial earned her a front-page article in The Wall Street Journal in June 1983 titled "A Onetime Choirgirl Rules Sex Goddess On Puerto Rican television." The commercial employed a play on words between the English word coolant and Spanish culón, which means a lot of derrière.

Iris Chacón appeared on American television shows such as America Onstage, The Joan Rivers Show, The Geraldo Rivera Show, and David Letterman. Dolly Parton and Loni Anderson of Puerto Rico were referred to by a letterman who joked about proposing to her. "She was the answer to "Where's the beef?" Griffin said of her. "A reference to the Wendy's commercial of the time period.' Chacón, however, reached her peak in 1984 by 1984, but not being able to achieve a "Anglo" market, she had to cancel her show in Puerto Rico by mid-1985 at the age of 35. Her program lasted in syndication until the 1980s.

Chacón appeared on several Spanish-language programs, including Anabel, Siempre en Domingo, Mala Noche No., and Al Ritmo de la Noche, which were all Televisa programs outside of the United States, including Anabel, Siempre en Domingo, Mala Noche No. 1.
