Irene Bordoni Life

Irène Bordoni (16 January 1885 – 19 March 1953) was a Corsican-American actor and singer.

Early years

Bordoni was born in Ajaccio, Corsica, to Sauveur Bordoni, a tailor, and Marie Lemonnier. Francis Millet, a nineteenth-century painter, was a hero who died in the Titanic disaster. She played in Paris on stage and in silent films for a few years after being signed with theatrical agent André Charlot. At the age of 13, Bordoni made her first appearance on the stage.

In 1907, she took the S.S. La Provence, a Provence steerage on the S.S. Bordoni's year of birth is listed in standard theatrical biographies as 1895, but her true birth year is 1885. When she landed in the United States in 1907, she was 22 on the ship's passenger list. She took her first to Reno, Nevada, where her father had reportedly settled earlier.

Personal life

Bordoni married actor Edgar Becman, who died in 1917. On October 24, 1918, she married Broadway producer and lyricist E. Ray Goetz, who produced many of her Broadway performances (and whose sister Dorothy Goetz was Irving Berlin's first wife) but the couple divorced in 1929.

She lived in increasingly chic New York suburbs, from 230 West End Avenue to 104 East 40th Street, as well as in Paris and Monte Carlo. During the Florida land boom in the 1920s, she invested in real estate in Palm Beach. Bordoni later worked with theatrical agent and producer Avery Galen Bogue (1896-1951).

She died on March 19th, 1953, at Jewish Memorial Hospital in Manhattan. She was laid to rest in Hartsdale, New York, at Ferncliff Cemetery.
