EXCLUSIVE: We survived a terrifying ambush by gun-wielding Peruvian pirates in the Amazon - by fighting them off with PADDLES: Two ex-Royal Marines tell their incredible true story
www.dailymail.co.uk,
October 26, 2023
EXCLUSIVE: Two former Royal Marines told MailOnline how they were attacked by gun-wielding Peruvian pirates in the Amazon before battling them off with paddles. John Bathgate, 35, and Ian Roberts, 34, were attempting a world-first expedition across 3,186 miles of the Amazon River from Ecuador's highest point, Volcán Chimborazo, to Brazil's coast. However, two Peruvian pirates escorted the British former commandos and arrested them at gunpoint as they approached the Colombian border in their canoes. Despite being only equipped with oars and suffering from gunshot wounds, Mr Bathgate and Mr Roberts fought back, surviving to overthrowrow the bandits and flee to safety. They've now spoken to MailOnline about their ordeal during their 'Summit to Sea' experience, the latest installment of this website's new human interest series 'My Story' that features people with extraordinary life stories.

It was either the force of the bullet or intuition that caused him to dive from the pirate boat into the waters of the Amazon for the first time John Bathgate (left; top right with Ian Roberts; bottom right being handled by the Peruvian). He can't recall which one he belongs to. However, he recalls his precise thoughts as the second shot to drown his assassination by throwing his head under the water. "This isn't going to happen again," I thought. I needed to move.

On the coast of Brazil, John Bathgate (centre) and Ian Roberts (left) were attempting a world first to travel 3186 miles of the Amazon River from its highest point, Volcán Chimborazo in Ecuador, to the Atlantic Ocean. However, the former commandos were ambushed and arrested at gunpoint by two Peruvian pirates as they approached the Colombian border. Facing down the barrel of a gun (bottom right), and arming only with their rowing oars, Bathgate and Roberts erupted, launching a desperate and brutal assault on their would-be captors. In the tussle (top right), Bathgate sustained two gunshot wounds, but the brave Brits dominated the bandits, dismanaging their art and making a dramatic break for safety.
As the NRL's first gay player says the game is afraid of 'offending religious characters,' Manly legend Ian Roberts says there is no reason to change following the club's rainbow jersey saga is a 'kick in the guts.'
www.dailymail.co.uk,

Since last year's rainbow jersey saga ended the game, the NRL's only out gay player has slammed his former club Manly and the entire league for a lack of progress for LGBTQI+ rights. Ian Roberts (left) was 'heartbroken' last year, when seven Sea Eagles players (including Josh Aloiai) refused to wear the club's rainbow inclusion jersey (right) due to their religious convictions in what ended up tearing the organization apart. Since the uproar surrounding the saga's demise, not much has changed in the game when it comes to inclusivity, and Roberts is fed up.

Anthony Manson, 65, is thought to have survived after the brutal assault, which is believed to have occurred at his caravan in a field where he lives off grid. In Tintern, Monmouthshire, armed police officers have spent the day wandering around the field and finding a nearby park. Mr Manson is said to be accompanied by his regal-looking cano corso dog. At least two police vans, four other cops, and an ambulance are among the three-acre road in Tintern, Monmouthshire, that he bought from a local farmer for £60,000 seven years ago. Mr Manson is being investigated by officers who have requested the public not to approach him, according to a spokesperson for Gwent Police.

The court heard that the lorry had previously been used in a film set for a horror film in Cheshire.
Ian Roberts, a NRL legend, admits that it will be difficult for gay players to play these days

When Ian Roberts (main photos) became the first gay player to come out in the 1990s, he shocked the footy world, but the trailblazer believes it will be even harder to come out now. In a new documentary about his life, the 57-year-old Manly and Rabbits legend's life will be the first to die out now, despite a fellow footy player's suicide in 1998 after horrific homophobic abuse. It comes after seven players at his ex-club refused to wear a rainbow jersey (inset) due to religious convictions, which Roberts dismissed as "hypocritical."

The blood tests in the United Kingdom have rebounded
www.dailymail.co.uk,
October 21, 2022
According to reports today, there are now four days of O negative blood in England compared to two days last week. More than six days of stocks are anticipated for the health service. Hospitals were advised to take steps to safeguard their scarce supply last week, including postponing non-urgent elective procedures that require blood on standby, such as hip and knee replacements.
A blood test result by the NHS suggests that a £2-a-pop drug may be able to help solve the urgent blood supply crisis.'
www.dailymail.co.uk,
October 14, 2022
On Wednesday, NHS Blood and Transplant released its first ever amber alert, sparking a series of surgical postponements as hospitals continue to ration blood supplies. Health officials are concerned that the health crisis could go on for months. If stocks continue to decline, it could result in a red alert, which would result in only the most critical emergency surgeries cancelled. However, researchers told MailOnline that the situation might be lowered by a third with a drug that cuts surgery bleeding by a third. Transexamic acid, according to Professor Ian Roberts, an epidemiologist at the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine, may be a'significant part of the therapy.' Now, medical institutions have ordered doctors and anesthetists to fork it out in all surgical procedures, in which more than 500 million blood loss is likely.
How the NHS's dire blood shortage was sparked by cancelling walk-ins six years ago
www.dailymail.co.uk,
October 13, 2022
Over the next two weeks, more than 10,000 consultations to donate blood have been scheduled. Most appointments this week have been fully booked, but the NHS is still waiting for patients with O negative or O positive blood to apply for priority booking. O Negative blood is the form that can be given to everyone and is used in emergencies when a person's blood group is uncertain.
A surge of support for the NHS has sparked a surge in donations
www.dailymail.co.uk,
October 12, 2022
Because of the rush to donate blood, kind-hearted would-be donors in England have been held in half-an-hour queues (left). The first 'amber' alert status was released earlier today by health executives because of dwindling stocks, which may have resulted in urgent operations such as hip replacements being delayed. Low staffing levels in donor clinics, according to health officials, are contributing to the shortage, which is exacerbated by Covid and other illnesses in the workforce. However, the NHS Confederation has stated, 'If anyone is willing to donate blood, now is the time for them to come forward.'
How to give blood in UK: Where can I donate to NHS?What is my type?
www.dailymail.co.uk,
October 12, 2022
England is at a 'amber' status, meaning hospitals must'reduce and prioritise' blood use, as well as elective surgeries such as hip replacements and planned surgery to repair a curved spine. But urgent or emergency, cancer, and transplant surgeries will all continue to function as normal for now. The NHS was still in the pre-amber stage before today. Staff in hospitals were advised to be wary of wasting stock and encouraging patients to avoid using blood types that were more likely to be low.
