Ship which defied Nazi U-boats to transport vital resources during World War II to be scrapped and replaced with slavery reflection room in Liverpool

A ship which defied the terror of the Nazi U-Boats to transport vital resources around Britain has been destroyed and will be replaced with a slavery reflection room. Maritime historians have condemned the decision, branding it an 'abomination' to the memory of the seafarers who bravely crewed the vessel during the Second World War. Built in 1917, the De Wadden ferried coal and food through the Irish Sea to southern England between 1939 and 1945 while Hitler's infamous submarines lurked under the waves. Official National Historic Ships Register records say: 'Her finest hour was probably during the Second World War when she was one of a small handful of vessels which provided the vital lifeline of supplies to the Irish Republic.'

For centuries, the Black Swan (inset) in Helmsley, North Yorkshire, has been at the center of this rural community, and a post office counter opened today (pictured top) restoring a vital service that began a year ago. Barclays, the town's last bank, closed 18 months earlier, and the Cosstcutter store's temporary post office closed abruptly last August. Residents and local businesses have now supported postal services, resulting in the opening of a new counter in the hotel's hallway.

The New York Red Bulls defeated Cincinnati 2-1 in the MLS Eastern Conference Championships, the MLS Eastern Conference champion wins a dramatic victory

ISABEL BALDWIN AT RED BULL ARENA: FC FC Cincinnati showed why it belongs in the league by winning its third game in a row, but not without challenges. Cincinnati was playing its fifth game without forward Brandon Vazquez, and it was evidently lacking the clinical finishing that he had shown for the US in recent weeks as it delayed their 2-1 victory over the New York Red Bulls on Wednesday night. Cincinnati, who were 1-0 down in the first half, struggled to find the right timing until being bailed out by VAR and a last-gasp scrappy winner.
