Ian Davenport Life

Ian Davenport (born 8 July 1966) is an English abstract painter and former Turner Prize nominee.

Life and work

Ian Davenport was born in Sidcup and studied art at Northwich College of Art and Design in Cheshire and later at Goldsmith's College, where he graduated in 1988. In the Freeze exhibition organised by Damien Hirst, he exhibited. His first solo show was in 1990, and the British Art Exhibition was held in the same year. In 1991, he was nominated for the Turner Prize for the first time.

Many of his creations are made by pouring paint onto a tilted surface and allowing gravity to spread the paint over the surface.

He created a thirteen-meter mural for Tate Britain's Days Like These in 2003 by ripping lines of differently colored paint across the wall from a syringe. Poured Lines: Southwark, his highest public commission to date, was unveiled in September 2006. He created the West End Wall of the University of Oxford's Department of Biochemistry.

He has made some sylistic comparisons between his work and that of Bridget Riley, Helen Frankenthaler, and Callum Innes.

In 2014, a monograph on him was published.

He is a Patron of Paintings in Hospitals, a charity that provides art for health and social care in England, Wales, and Northern Ireland.
