RICHARD EDEN: Prince William's Kenya guru quits wildlife role in fury

www.dailymail.co.uk, July 11, 2024
RICHARD EDEN: Few, if any, families matter more to Prince William. Partly because he remains bewitched by 'the Balmoral of Africa' - as Lewa, their 62,000-acre patch of Kenya, is sometimes known. And undoubtedly because of his personal bonds with Jessica 'Jecca' Craig, often considered his first serious girlfriend, and her father, Ian Craig, on whom he personally conferred his eponymous Award For Conservation in 2022. So the Prince will be distraught to hear of Craig's abrupt and anguished departure from the Northern Rangelands Trust he founded in Kenya 20 years ago. Since then it has created one of Africa's most successful rhino sanctuaries and persuaded governments to ban the sale of ivory, thereby sparing innumerable elephants from slaughter by poachers. In an excoriating letter announcing his resignation from the Trust - a network of 43 previously separate groups which he painstakingly stitched together - Craig makes a series of damning allegations.

The COMMONER denominator! The princes, princesses, and even a queen or two are among the many monarchs who have to adapt with the times

www.dailymail.co.uk, September 3, 2023
An actor, a writer, a TV news reader, and even a model. One or two people did nothing at all. These royal wives are notable not only because some of them were born free, but because none of them were aristocrats. They were not intended to make a point of view on it; instead, mere commoners, in a state of affairs that had never been imagined. Here we take a look at the women who are living proof that monarchies are truly changing with the times...

Princess Lilian of Sweden explains how a coal miner's daughter was born in Swansea from a terraced house

www.dailymail.co.uk, May 22, 2023
One observer put it best, a true rags to riches tale - just like Cinderella'. And who could doubt the truth of that in the case of Princess Lilian, who went from the slums of Swansea to membership of the Swedish royal family? However, if it's a tale that is new to you, one explanation is the attempt by Lilian Davies to hide her fairy tale relationship away from the public eye. Princess Lilian, as she was later known, was born on August 30 1915 to William Davies, a miner turned market stall holder, and Gladys Mary Curran, a shop assistant. Lilian spent her youth growing up in a terraced house in the city's slum district that was later demolished in the 1930s. Lilian's life changed direction as an infant. She would help her father with his stall and worked at a launderette to earn more money for her family. In 1943, she held a cocktail party to celebrate her birthday in war-torn London. One of the guests was a handsome Swedish naval attaché at the Swedish embassy in London, who happened to be the third son of the King of Sweden, Gustaf VI Adolph (pictured left, with Lilian, center). There was an immediate spark between the two couples, but nothing could be done as Lilian was still married. 'He was so handsome, my prince,' she recalled at their first meeting in her book.' Especially in uniform. So charming and thoughtful. It's so funny.'

You've got to have conflict (and cheeky kisses!)

Tim Bentinck, the voice of David Archer, and other actors discuss how the rural Radio 4 drama is still as popular today as it was years ago. Queen Camilla is such a big fan that she attended an edition of the show in 2011, chatting with Ian Craig, the head chef at the Grey Gables luxury hotel, about his 'delicious' homemade shortbread. Alan Titchmarsh judged Ambridge's gardens, Kirstie Allsopp opened the festival, Professor Robert Winston was a fertility consultant, and Griff Rhys Jones led the campaign to recover the Cat And Fiddle pub.
