After killing a man in robbery, their mothers begged the Queen for clemency... Sixty years on, the troubling fate of the last men to be hanged in Britain

In the early hours of August 13, 1964, Peter Allen was frantically pacing his cell at Walton Prison, in Liverpool. Every so often, the 21-year-old would break down in tears or howl in distress as the clock ticked down to 8am. On the hour, the key turned in the lock of his cell door and executioner Robert Leslie Stewart led the 6ft 2in condemned man to the scaffold and positioned him over a trapdoor, before placing a white hood over his head. As Stewart slipped a noose around his neck, Allen muttered just one word: 'Jesus.' The hangman pulled the lever, Allen dropped through the hatch and the rope did the rest. The entire process took less than ten seconds. At the very same time, a similar scene was being played out 31 miles away in Strangeways Prison, Manchester, where Allen's friend Gwynne Owen Evans, 24, was being held. Like Allen, Evans tearfully protested his innocence to the end. The crime for which the pair had been convicted was the murder of John West, a van driver for a laundry firm.
Doctors feared Nottingham triple-killer Valdo Calocane would slay someone - but let him walk the streets anyway: Astonishing new revelation as footage shows paranoid schizophrenic attacking a flatmate in another warning sign of his violence

The 32-year-old paranoid schizophrenic went on a rampage in the city in June last year killing 19-year-old student's Grace O'Malley-Kumar and Barnaby Webber before fatally stabbing Ian Coates, 65.Now, speaking for the first time since the tragedy, Calocane's mother and brother have revealed they were handed a 300-page dossier of medical records after the killer was sentenced. On one occasion, a psychiatrist doing ward rounds at a Nottinghamshire Trust Hospital raised serious concerns about Calocane's behaviour - and suggested someone could die as a result of his actions.

The 32-year-old paranoid schizophrenic went on a rampage in the northern city in June last year killing 19-year-old student's Grace O'Malley-Kumar and Barnaby Webber before fatally stabbing Ian Coates, 65. Now, speaking for the first time since the tragedy, Calocane's mother and brother have claimed the deaths 'could have been prevented' if the mental health services in the UK were not 'broken'.

But they told BBC Panorama they only received the 300-page medical summary containing the warning after his sentencing. It comes as one of a series of opportunities that could have prevented the killings in June 2023. The 32-year-old paranoid schizophrenic was given an indefinite hospital order earlier this year after he went on a rampage in Nottingham city centre, killing 19-year-old students Barnaby Webber and Grace O'Malley-Kumar and caretaker Ian Coates, 65. His victims' families wanted him put on trial for murder, but in January this year Nottingham Crown Court accepted his guilty plea for manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility. Calocane was diagnosed with paranoid schizophrenia in 2020 and was sectioned four times in the last two years.
Father of Nottingham stab victim Grace O'Malley Kumar says bereaved families need 'black and white' reassurance that triple killer Valdo Calocane will never be released after judge rules not to change his sentence

Dr Sanjoy Kumar blasted the system as unjust and unfair after a judge ruled yesterday that the killer's sentence of an indefinite hospital order was not unduly lenient. The paranoid schizophrenic was given the order for manslaughter after he 'brutally' stabbed to death students Barney Webber and Grace O'Malley-Kumar, both 19, and school caretaker Ian Coates, 65, in the early hours of June 13 last year. The Court of Appeal in London yesterday refused to change the sentence, and Grace's father today said they have not been given any reassurance that 'this man is not coming out'. 'There are so many people that are released from public orders and what we want is something in black and white or there has to be a change in the law... that this man can never be released because he is too much of a risk to the public, but we need that in black and white we need that reassurance,' he told Good Morning Britain .

Calocane was given an indefinite hospital order for the manslaughter of three people in Nottingham last year - and the Court of Appeal in London today refused to change the sentence. The paranoid schizophrenic 'brutally' stabbed to death students Barney Webber and Grace O'Malley-Kumar, both 19, and school caretaker Ian Coates, 65, in the early hours of June 13 last year. His victims' families wanted him put on trial for murder but in January this year Nottingham Crown Court accepted his guilty plea to manslaughter on the grounds of diminished responsibility. In a statement following the appeal court's decision, Barney's mother Emma Webber today said the families 'now face their own life sentence' of ensuring Calocane is not released.

The Court of Appeal heard this morning that Valdo Calocane should have his 'unduly lenient' indefinite hospital order changed to one of life imprisonment following a referral from the Attorney General. Prosecutors had previously accepted the 32-year-old's guilty pleas to manslaughter with diminished responsibility and did not seek a murder conviction after medical evidence showed Calocane has paranoid schizophrenia.

Lesley Ann was just ten years old when he was approached by Ian Brady and Myra Hindley at a funfair on Boxing Day 1964. The pair then took her before subjecting her to sickening abuse and torture, which they caught on tape. They buried her body in a shallow grave on Saddleworth Moor, then murdering her and burying her body in a shallow grave. Who is Shamima Begum's lawyer? Ian Brady, a former client of the ISIS bride, is the head of a law firm representing ISIS bride Birnberg Peirce

Ms Begum lost her appeal earlier today about the removal of her British citizenship from her appeal at the Court of Appeal. The ISIS bride travelled to Syria in 2015 to join the terror group at the age of 15, but her citizenship was revoked on national security grounds soon after she was discovered in a Syrian refugee camp in February 2019. Ms Begum's law firm, Birnberg Peirce, moved to reverse the decision at the Court of Appeal, with the Home Office opposing the petition. However, three judges refused to hear the case, and the firm's attorneys, Gareth Peirce (right) and Daniel Furner (left), stayed outside The Royal Courts of Justice this morning.
IAN BRADY - THE UNTOLD STORY: Brady was arrested by police and then realised his terrible mistake

Ian Brady and Myra Hindley, the Moors Murderers, were never expected to be caught. They were omnipotent after cold-heartedly killing four young people in Manchester and burying them each in peat graves on Saddleworth Moor. When I spoke to Brady in prison 30 years ago, I asked if they had been concerned about the possibility of living into middle age or even beyond. They told me that they were discussing a long-term initiative to convert a farmhouse.

Brady brought his photographic equipment along to Myra's house and waited for her grandmother to go to bed early in their marriage. Then and Myra were stripped naked, wearing only white hoods with eye slits to mask their identities.

Ian Brady, the Moors murderer, was chilling for the first time. He was tall and sinister, sporting a black polo neck sweater, blue jeans, and dark glasses. As he towered over me, I imagined myself reflecting in the lenses, knowing that this was the last glimpse his young victims had of him, writes Dr. Alan Keightley, who used to visit Brady in prison.

Hindley's brother-in-law David Smith alerted the police after the murder of their fifth and final victim, 17-year-old Edward Evans, in 1965. Brady never showed any remorse for his heinous crimes, while Hindley maintained she had been beaten and drugged by her partner into becoming a cold-blooded killer - here we look at who they were and how they died

Lucy Letby, a father who attempted to murder, has been 'disgusted and angry' that she will appeal her convictions for the deaths of seven children and the attempted murder of six others
www.dailymail.co.uk,
September 15, 2023
Officials have reported that child serial killer nurse Lucy Letby has officially applied to contest her sentencing at the Court of Appeal. The 33-year-old, who was sentenced to a whole life term for killing seven babies and assaulting six others, is set to begin her attempts to reveal herself at a court hearing later this month. One father, whose baby Letby tried to murder, told the Mail: "I'm disgusted and angry that Letby is appealing.' If we haven't been through enough, we can't be in a situation to be able to.' We're trying to recover our lives, and now this is a joke of a system. I'm not sure if she's appealing on the grounds she can appeal - there were no supporting factors in the lawsuit.' Letby's request comes after a scientist argued that the prosecution against her was based on "unreliable expert opinion" and "a poor grasp" of science.

He was sentenced to two years in prison with no chance of parole, one of only 63 people to receive such a sentence.

Judge tells Lucy Letby she has 'deprived children of their siblings' as he sentences her for murdering babies - but killer nurse refuses to leave cell to come to court

Mr Justice Goss told the killer nurse that she had "robbed parents of their beloved children" and "deprived siblings of their brothers and sisters." The most prolific child serial murderer in modern British history refused to appear in court today, where she is likely to be sent a full life term. Her decision not to attend court today was described as 'the last act of wickedness from a coward,', prompting further calls for new legislation that would encourage criminals to appear in court.

More than a dozen family members descended on Manchester Crown Court to see Britain's most prolific child killer face justice this morning, but they were denied admission as she cowered in her prison. Nicholas Johnson KC, the prosecutor, told Manchester Crown Court Letby's pleaded guilty to a full-life tariff. According to him, the murders were admisible on several fronts, including that they were foreseeable and contained elements of'sadistic behaviour' against children. Mr Justice Goss has stated that he has no power to order a defendant to attend a sentencing hearing, but that the Government has promised to give judges the ability to do so.
Politicians have requested that an official probe into Lucy Letby's reign of terror get more powers to convince hospital executives and others that a weak probe might result in future 'depraved crimes'

Former ministers and experts have pleaded that the nurse's sickening charges be probed into a statutory basis and led by a judge with the ability to order witnesses to appear and testify. The trial of the NHS serial killer, who is likely to face a full life term today, heard that administrators at the Countess of Chester Hospital had multiple chances to have her removed from the maternity unit but that they refused to act. The government has opened an investigation but wants it to have less power, citing that "speed is of the essence" and a judge-led inquiry may be too slow. However, former justice secretary Robert Buckland told the Times: "If we don't get all the key witnesses giving evidence, we'll be unable to learn the lessons from this tragic story and we won't see evil predators repeating her depraved crimes."

Despite her wishes, former justice secretary Robert Buckland ordered that the sentencing to be played into Letby's cell if she does not attend, and that she should have to listen to the victim statements from the families of the babies she murdered. 'She needs to hear the victim's personal remarks, as well as impact statements that might have impacted the world,' Mr Buckland said.
