Iain Matthews Life

Iain Matthews (born Ian Matthews MacDonald, 16 June 1946) is an English singer and singer-songwriter.

Ian MacDonald, a founding member of the British folk rock band Fairport Convention from 1967 to 1969, before launching Matthews Southern Comfort, his own band, had a UK number one in 1970, but he avoided identifying him with Ian Matthews (his mother's maiden name) after she left Fairport.

In 1989, he changed the spelling of his first name to Iain, and has been known as Iain Matthews ever since.

He appeared on their first three albums before retiring in 1969 as a member of Fairport Convention when they were heavily influenced by American folk rock.

He began as a solo artist before forming the bands Matthews Southern Comfort and then Plainsong.

He was also a member of Hi-Fi, No Grey Faith, and More Than A Song, and has twice revived Plainsong and Matthews Southern Comfort in the 2000s.

With the latest MSC version, he continues to tour regularly, and a new album titled "The New Mine" is set to debut in 2020. In a career spanning more than 50 years, he has appeared on more than 100 albums and written "Thro' My Eyes : A Memoir" about his time in the music industry.

Matthews then moved to Austin, Texas, and released several albums on a number of German independent labels. He appeared with Andy Roberts at the 1992 Cambridge Folk Festival, which resulted in the first of what became several altered versions of Plainsong.

Matthews, a member of the Shannon Denny tribute band "Fotheringay," which was the name of the castle in which Mary, Queen of Scots, was imprisoned, as well as the name of a song about the castle that Denny had performed for Fairport Convention in the 1970s, was relocated to Amsterdam, where he became involved in independent music projects and collaborations, including the introduction of a short-lived band Denny, as well as the name of ay In 2008, he and the Dutch jazz ensemble, Searing Quartet, met in Horst, the south of the Netherlands. He recorded his first Matthews Southern Comfort album in 40 years in September 2010 and then returned to a major recording label in September 2010.

Matthews has collaborated with Dutch pianist and composer Egbert Derix since 2003. They met in Cambrinus when Matthews, a jazz fan, attended a Searing Quartet concert (Horst, The Netherlands). Matthews asked Derix to accompany him on his 2003 tour of his 1970 album If You Saw Thro' My Eyes. They appeared at a number of concerts with Eric Coenenen (bass), Arthur Lijten (drums), and Ad Vanderveen (guitar).
