Hugh Lofting Life

Hugh John Lofting (14 January 1886 – 26 September 1947) was an English author who worked as a civil engineer and created the classic children's character of Doctor Dolittle.

Dolittle appeared in Lofting's illustrated letters to his children, written from the British Army trenches in World War I.

Personal life

Lofting, born January 14, 1886 in Maidenhead, Berkshire, England, to Elizabeth Agnes (Gannon) and John Brien Lofting, were of English and Irish descent. Hilary Lofting, his eldest brother, died in Australia in 1915 and became a novelist.

Lofting was educated at Mount St Mary's College in Spinkhill, Derbyshire. He studied civil engineering at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Cambridge, Massachusetts, from 1905 to 1906.

Before enlisting in the Irish Guards regiment of the British Army during the First World War, Lofting traveled extensively as a civil engineer. He wrote imaginative letters, which later became the foundation of the popular Doctor Dolittle books for children, rather than wanting to write to his children about the brutal war. Lofting and his family were evacuated to Killingworth, Connecticut, after being wounded in the war. He was married three times and had three children, one of whom, Christopher, became the executor of his literary estate.

Lofting died in Topanga, California, on September 26, 1947, from cirrhosis of the liver. He is buried at Evergreen Cemetery in Killingworth, Middlesex County, Connecticut.
