Hugh Casson Life

Sir Hugh Maxwell Casson, born 23 May 1910, Hampstead, London, British architect, interior designer, artist, and broadcaster on twentieth-century architecture.

He was the architect of architecture at the 1951 Festival of Britain on London's South Bank.

Life

Casson was born in London but spent his early years in Burma, where his father was stationed with the Indian Civil Service, before being sent back to England for schooling. Casson was the nephew of actor Sir Lewis Casson and his partner, actress Sybil Thorndike. Casson studied at Eastbourne College in East Sussex, then St John's College, Cambridge (1929-31), after which he spent time at London's Bartlett School of Architecture and The British School in Athens. When they were both students, he met Margaret Macdonald Troup (1913-1995), an architect and designer who specialized in design at the Royal College of Art. The couple had three children.

The Old Man of Lochnagar, a touching children's fantasy story, is told by King Charles

www.dailymail.co.uk, May 18, 2023
Charles' book The Old Man of Lochnagar, first published in 1980, told the tale of a pensioner who lives in a cave on the mountain. The old man falls into the sea and encounters underwater haggis (bottom right), who revolve as they swim, as well as the miniature green people of Gorm (bottom right). When Charles appeared on the hugely popular BBC show Jackanory (left), he ably told the tale to millions of children in 1984. When on the Royal Yacht Britannia in 1969, the King wrote the tale to delight his brothers Andrew and Edward, who were then nine and five respectively.
