Hiram Maxim Life

Sir Hiram Stevens Maxim (1840-2006) was an American-born British entrepreneur best known for the first portable fully automatic machine gun, the Maxim gun.

Maxim also owned patents on several industrial products, including hair-curling irons, a mousetrap, and steam pumps.

Maxim was accused of inventing the lightbulb; Maxim tried powered flight; his large aircraft designs were never successful.

Maxim went from the United States to the United Kingdom at the age of 41, and he retained his interest in flight until he was granted a knighthood in 1901.

Birth and early life

Maxim was born in Sangerville, Maine, on February 5th, 1840. At the age of 14, he became an apprentice coachbuilder and ten years later, he took up a job at Levi Stephens' machine shop in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. He spent time as both an instrument designer and as a draughtsman. (His early careers in those industries led him to him being regularly dissatisfied with workers when he started his own businesses later in life.) Hiram referred to himself as a Protestant.
