EXCLUSIVE: Within 23 service divisions around the country, 54 officers were suspended from service and sentenced to custodial jail, some of whom were completely suspended, meaning they would not serve time in jail unless convicted of another offence. Among the charges charged were rape, child exploitation, assault, and misconduct, with three female officers being found. In total, the sentences equate to 106 years, eight months, and 12 days.

An on-duty female police officer was found guilty of misconduct after being asleep behind the wheel of a patrol vehicle clutching a bottle of wine. Helen Kane (left, right), a Northumbrian police officer, was discovered "slumped" against the police van's driver side when a dog walker passed by on November 3rd last year. The marked van, which also had three police dogs, was seen parked in the middle of a junction in Whickham, near Gateshead, with its engine still working. Kane, a native of Belmont, County Durham, was charged with misconduct in a public office last week (inset), which she denied. Kane was found guilty of the charges on Friday after less than an hour of deliberation.

After a dog walker discovered her behind the wheel of a parked police vehicle, Helen Kane, 38, was arrested on Waggs Lane in Wickham, Gateshead, last year. A reading of 117 micrograms of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath was given by a Northumbria Police officer, over three times the legal maximum of 35. The marked vehicle was seen around lunchtime parked with its engine still running. Kane could be seen'slumped' against the driver's side of the vehicle with a bottle of wine between her legs, according to Teesside Crown Court.
