Helen LaRue Lowe (born January 8, 1954), also known as Helen Baylor, is an American singer-songwriter.

Early life

Helen LaRue Lowe, born in Tulsa, Oklahoma, Baylor is the oldest of seven children; she has five brothers and one sister. Baylor was moved to Los Angeles at the age of 11, as her Dad (who was in the Army) had been transferred there. Baylor first appeared as a nightclub entertainer in Los Angeles.

Career

Aretha Franklin, Stevie Wonder, and B.B. welcomed Baylor to his first day. Although still in her teens, the queen appeared in the musical Hair as a child. As Little Helen for the Soultown brand, she appeared on television as a producer in 1967/68. She performed in Broadway musical Hair in the 1970s and spent her remaining years as a session singer for artists including Captain & Tennille, Les McCann, and Rufus. As a member of Side Effects, her vocals appeared on their third album What You Need, which was based on Ronnie Laws' song "Always There" and was a R&B chart hit. Later in the 1980s, she would have to suffer as a result of heroin use.

Baylor became sober late in the decade, raising her Catholic faith and deciding to focus her attention on gospel music. In 1990, she released Highly Recommended, her first gospel album on Word Records, and her first five albums all made the top ten of the United States. The Billboard Top Gospel Albums chart, with the most popular being 1994's The Live Experience, which reached #1 on the charts. Expansion Records' track "Oasis" was very popular in the United Kingdom and remained on the Music Week Dance Chart for 14 weeks. In addition, the song "Sold Out" (from the album Start All Over) received a Dove Award for Contemporary Gospel Recorded Song of the Year at the 24th GMA Dove Awards in 1993. Baylor revealed in July 2011 that she was co-producing a film about her life. "A Praying Grandmother: The Helen Baylor Story" will feature accounts from her first appearance in the film, "Helen's Testimony" (Word, 1995), as well as her autobiography, No Greater Love: The Helen Baylor Story. Cassandra Hollis, an award-winning filmmaker, was approached by Baylor to coproduce and direct the film. In 2000, Baylor was inducted into the Oklahoma Jazz Hall of Fame.
