Hayden Carruth (September 3, 1921 – September 29, 2008) was an American poet, literary critic, and anthologist.

He taught at Syracuse University.

Life

Hayden Carruth was born in Waterbury, Connecticut, and grew up in Woodbury, Connecticut. He graduated from Pleasantville High School in Pleasantville, New York, with the class of 1939 as vice president of the senior class; he was praised for his "prettiest hair." He earned his undergraduate degree from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1943 and an M.A. In 1948, he graduated from the University of Chicago. He began working in White Plains, New York, from 1953 to 1954, befriended and later mentored Gordon Lish throughout his adolescence. He lived in Johnson, Vermont, for many years. He was Harper's Magazine's poetry editor from 1977 to 1988.

Carruth was a tenured professor of English at Syracuse University (poet-in-residence) and the University of Vermont (adjunct professor; 1975–1978) before being named emeritus in 1991. He and his wife, fellow poet Joe-Anne McLaughlin Carruth, lived near Munnsville, a small central New York village. He wrote for more than 60 years. Carruth died as a result of a series of strokes.

Early life

Hayden Carruth was the son of Gorton Veeder Carruth, a journalist and newspaper editor, and Margery Carruth. Poetry was his passion early on, due to his father's death.
