Since moving from 225nd to fifth most popular baby girls' name in a decade, Ivy has risen from 753nd to fourth place, while Ava has risen from seventh to third, and Isla has risen from third to third place. Freya, up from 118th to sixth for girls, and Arthur, up from 234th to fourth for boys, according to the Office of National Statistics (ONS), comparing standings in 2021 to 1996. The ONS also found that older mothers are more likely to give their babies traditional names than younger mothers who use shorter modern versions of Noah and Olivia. Oliver came in second place, having been the most popular boys' name for eight years, while Olivia dominated the girls' list for the sixth year in a row. In 1996, Ivy ranked fifth, but it fell to second place in 1998, when it was first ranked 2,165th. However, there have been some major falls since 1996, with Lauren down from fifth to fifth, Megan Down from ninth to 285th, and Amy falling from ninth to 285th in a row. No one of the boys' top ten in the top ten since 1996 has dropped by such a rate, but Matthew, down from sixth to 123rd, and Ryan, who went from seventh to 106th, are the two greatest decliners.
