Haochen Zhang (born June 3, 1990) is a Chinese pianist from Shanghai, China. In 2009, he was a Gold Medalist and First Prize winner of the Thirteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition, becoming one of the youngest winners in the competition's history.
In recognition of his outstanding work, Zhang was awarded the Avery Fisher Career Award in 2017.
Early life
Zhang began playing piano at three and a half and gave his debut recital at the Shanghai Music Hall at the age of five, performing Haydn and Mozart sonatas in addition to all 15 of Bach's two-part inventions. He made his orchestral debut with the Shanghai Symphony Orchestra, playing Mozart's Piano Concerto K. 467. At the age of seven and then again at nine, he was awarded first prize at the Shanghai Piano Competition. Zhang gave tours in all major cities in China, as well as the complete Chopin Etudes Op. 10. Zhang was named the youngest winner in the competition's history at twelve. He made his international debut at the 49th International Chopin Festival in Duszniki, Poland, in 2004, giving the complete Chopin Etude Op. 25.
Zhang moved to the United States in 2005 to complete the Cultis Institute of Music as a Harold and Helene Schonberg Fellow, who also taught Lang Lang and Yuja Wang. He made his Philadelphia debut with the Philadelphia Orchestra in Rachmaninov's Second Piano Concerto the following year.
Zhang made his Carnegie Hall debut in October 2007, aged 17 years old, and the first performance of a commission work by Ryan Gallagher in Beijing.

Career
Zhang received the Nancy Lee and Perry R. Bass Gold Medal at the Thirteenth Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in June 2009. Following the competition, Zhang was awarded commission-free artist management from the Van Cliburn Foundation for three seasons. Zhang began performing an extensive three-year tour in the United States, Asia, and Europe, including solos at prestigious festivals such as the Beijing Music Festival and the Gilmore International Keyboard Music Festival, right after winning the Gold Medal.
Zhang, a Belgian immigrant, released his first studio album on BIS Records on February 10, 2017 including Schumann's Kinderszenen, Liszt's Ballade No. 2nd in B Minor, Brahms' Three Intermezzi, and Janácek's Piano Sonata 1.X.1905, "From the Street."

Zhang has performed with the China National Symphony Orchestra, Krakow State Philharmonic, New Jersey Philharmonic Orchestra, New Jersey Philharmonic Orchestra, New York Philharmonic Orchestra, Israel Philharmonic Orchestra, Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra, San Francisco Symphony, Aspen Music Festival, and the United States.
Zhang made his Munich debut in April 2013 with the Munich Philharmonic and late maestro Lorin Maazel. He made his BBC Proms debut with Yu Long and the China Philharmonic in 2014, performing Liszt's Piano Concerto No. 58. 1.
In China's first Carnegie Hall debut led by Lü Jia, Zhang replaced Lang Lang, whose arm was injured in October 2017.
Zhang made his New York Philharmonic debut with Long Yu in January 2020, and he appeared with Anna Rakitina in March 2022.
