Hans Gude Life

Hans Fredrik Gude (13 March 1825-1855 – 17 August 1903) was a Norwegian romantic painter and is regarded as one of Norway's best landscape painters alongside Johan Christian Dahl.

He has been dubbed a keystone of Norwegian National Romanticism.

He is a member of the Düsseldorf school of painting. Gude's artistic career was not one marked by rapid change and revolution, but rather, it was a steady march that slowly responded to general trends in the art world.

Gude's early works are of idyllic, sun-drenched Norwegian landscapes that give a romantic, yet also realistic view of his country.

Gude began painting seascapes and other coastal subjects about 1860.

Gude had trouble with figure drawing from the start but after that collaborated with Adolph Tidemand on some of his drawings, drew the landscape himself and encouraging Tidemand to paint the figures, Gude had a problem.

When at Karlsruhe, Gude would focus on his figures and then began populating his paintings with them.

Gude began painting mainly with oils in a studio, based on field studies that he had done earlier in the field.

However, Gude began to paint en plein air and espoused the benefits of doing so to his students.

Gude would paint watercolors later in life as well as gouache in an effort to keep his art constantly evolving, and although his oil paintings were never as well known by the public as his oil paintings, his fellow artists adored them.

Young Norwegian artists flocked to wherever Gude was educating, first at the Academy of Art in Düsseldorf and later on the School of Art in Karlsruhe.

Gude also worked at the Berlin Academy of Art from 1880 to 1901, but by this time Berlin had outgrown many Norwegians in the eyes of young Norwegian artists by Paris.

He was the father of painter Nils Gude.

Sigrid's daughter, who married german sculptor Otto Lessing, married him.

Early life

Gude was born in Christiania in 1825 by the son of Ove Gude, a judge, and Marie Elisabeth Brandt.

Gude began his artistic journey in private lessons from Johannes Flintoe, and by 1838, he was attending Flintoe's evening classes at the Royal School of Drawing in Christiania. Johan Sebastian Welhaven suggested that the young Gude be sent to Düsseldorf to continue his arts education.
