Early life and family
Singh was born in 1967 in Sri Gurusar Modia village in Rajasthan's Ganganagar district. Maghar Singh, his father, was a landlord, and his mother, Naseeb Kaur, was a housewife. Maghar was a devoted follower of the DSS leader Shah Satnam Singh, and Gurmeet accompanied his father in the lama. Shah Satnam Singh initiated Singh into the Dera Sacha Sauda sect at the age of 7.
Singh spent many years as an adult, including driving a tractor and assisting his father in volunteer work at the dera, and he retired and started a potato farm for four years. Singh was not one of the three contenders expected to replace him when Shah Satnam Singh announced his resignation in 1990. Satnam Shah, however, appointed him as his replacement in a surprise public statement, giving him the nick "Huzoor Maharaj Gurmeet Ram Rahim" in honor. On September 23, 1990, Ram Rahim became the head of Dera at the age of 23.
Ram Rahim and his wife Harjeet Kaur have two daughters, named Amarpreet and Charanpreet. They also have a son, Jasmeet, who is married to Husanmeet, Harminder Singh Jassi's daughter.
