Harrison became addicted to cocaine in the 1980s and was able to kick the habit with the support of the Betty Ford Center.
Early life and career
Harrison was born in Avalon, California, in 1950, the middle child of Ed Harrison, a ship's captain and poet, and Donna Lee Nagely, an aspiring dancer, who later divorced. Kathleen (born 1948), her older sister, and Christopher (born 1961). During the Vietnam War period as a medic, he served in the US Army for two years.
He was the title character on Logan's Run (1977-78), after which he appeared Levi Zendt on the NBC miniseries Centennial (1978).
Before being brought to prominence in 1979 with the role of surgeon Dr. George "Gonzo" Gates on Trapper John, M.D., starring Pernell Roberts, he appeared on an episode of M*A*S*H. The medical drama was spun off from M*A*S*H. Harrison's tenure on Trapper John until the show's seventh season, when he decided to leave for other ventures. The series continued for many more episodes without Harrison, but it came to an end in 1985-86.
In the 1980s, Harrison's later role as stripper John Phillips in the 1981 TV film For Women and Gay Men made him a favorite among women and gay men. He spoofed the role in Fresno, a 1986 miniseries in which his protagonist was shirtless at every opportunity. Fresno was also a parody of the prime-time show Falcon Crest, where Harrison appeared on the final season (1989–90). As Falcon Crest's production began in early 1990, the series's parent company, Lorimar Television, cast Harrison in its forthcoming CBS sitcom The Family Man, starring Thomas L. Miller and Robert L. Boyett. Harrison, who debuted in the fall, starred Al Molinaro as a single fireman father raising his four children with the support of his father-in-law. Despite CBS' attempts to help it build a following, The Family Man was cancelled after one season.
