Grant Hutchison (born 13 June 1984 in Selkirk) is a Scottish drummer and percussionist.
He is best known as the drummer of the indie rock band Frightened Rabbit, with whom he has released five studio albums. With Grant joining in 2004, Frightened Rabbit started as a solo project for his brother, Scott.
Sing the Greys (2006), the pair's debut album.
Grant has appeared on each of the band's albums to date, as well as contributing to the songwriting process of the band's fourth studio album, Pedestrian Verse (2013).
Early life
Hutchison was born in Selkirk, Scotland, with his older brothers Scott and Neil. "I'd just get 'The Bairn,' he said remarking on his mother's nickname for Scott, "Frightened Rabbit," which later became their future band's namesake, because I was the youngest. When I was growing up, there could have been no way I'd been compared to a terrified rabbit – I was something more akin to Warner Brothers' Tasmanian Devil. "I was the polar opposite of Scott."
Personal life
Hutchison has lauded his and Scott's parents for their help with Frightened Rabbit, saying: "I'll forever be in debt to my parents for being so generous when the band wasn't so rosy." They're there when I need them, and they're just as important in the band's development as Scott and myself."
Hutchison had no qualifications to do anything else, so I'd likely be working in a cheese store or making my own cider. It's difficult to think about it because everything I've been able to do thanks to Frightened Rabbit has made me who I am now, and I can't really say where I'd be without it. In 2019, Hutchison founded Re:stalk, a cider import and distribution firm, following the band's break. Jaye and his wife Rebecca married in 2018 and had a daughter in 2020. The couple opened Aeble, a cider bottle store in Anstruther, in 2021.
Hutchison is a sponsor of the Cystinosis Foundation UK and a trustee of Tiny Changes, which was established by his family following the death of his brother Scott. He has been involved in various charitable sporting competitions, including The Great Big Cycle (2014) and the Great Scottish Run half-marathon in Glasgow (2018).
Career with Frightened Rabbit
Hutchison, a Glasgow musician, joined Scott Frightened Rabbit in 2004, making them a two-piece band. Grant, who decribing his membership in the band, said, "Scott started playing solo shows in Glasgow supporting friends' bands using just an acoustic guitar." I was the only drummer he knew, so I took up the challenge of being the second member of Frightened Rabbit. "I wanted to make the whole thing a bit noisier," says the author. Sing the Greys, Grant and Scott's debut album on the band's 2006 debut album, Sing the Greys, was released by the band's own brand, Hits the Fan, which was produced by producer Marcus MacKay.
Hutchison said of his aspirations in the band's beginnings: "My measure of success was selling out King Tut's in Glasgow, then being signed to Fat Cat, and, more recently, being coveted top ten albums." I hope that I never get to the point where I say "We've arrived" because I would never want to settle with what we've achieved."
The band's two subsequent studio albums, The Midnight Organ Fight (2008) and The Winter of Mixed Drinks (2010), increased the band's fanbase significantly. Scott [starting] the whole process off by writing the songs himself on an acoustic guitar, and then we sort of figure it out from there."
Scott Hutchison began a songwriting process with Grant and the other members of the band's fourth studio album, Pedestrian Verse (2013). "The writing process was different," Grant said. We've all been involved from the start. So, I had a lot more input with this one, including assisting artists in composing songs and taking them in new directions. To have a real effect on the songs, it's awesome to be a part of it. I've mostly played drums along with completely formed songs in the past. This time, I was playing along with Scott's very basic minimal tracks, and it didn't even have a melody. So that was new to me. It was fantastic!" Painting of a Panic Attack, the band's fifth studio album, was released in 2016.
Hutchison appeared on the sole album from the project Mastersystem in 2018.
Scott's death in May 2018 brought Frightened Rabbit to an end as a working band. Nevertheless, Hutchison performed behind the drums as a Frightened Rabbit fan, as part of The Charlatans' birthday and the band's performance of Sleep in the Park in December 2018.
