PETER HITCHENS: That didn't take long! Three weeks in and Labour's nasty diktats have already begun...

www.dailymail.co.uk, July 28, 2024
It took them no time at all. The sheer spiteful, dishonest and militant nastiness of the Starmer government has been revealed within less than a month of the election. Those who swallowed Sir Keir's pretence of moderation and his Chancellor's smiley pledges of responsibility and restraint can now regret their folly at leisure. www.dailymail.co.uk, July 21, 2024
As Twisters hits cinemas this weekend, adrenaline junkies might already be thinking about armouring up the family car and driving out to find their nearest tornado. But, despite its claims of scientific accuracy, according to real-life storm chasers, the reality isn't quite so cinematic. This sequel to the 1996 blockbuster 'Twister' stars Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar-Jones as storm chasers fighting against the odds to survive deadly tornadoes. However, although scientists really do brave golf ball-sized hail and winds of up to 200mph, it isn't actually the tornado that presents the biggest danger. Dr Wilson, a meteorologist from the National Centre for Atmospheric Research, told MailOnline: 'What you see in the movies is all action, but 95 per cent of severe storms research is just driving around for long distances and then waiting in gas station parking lots in the middle of nowhere.'

Twisters review: It may all be gale-force nonsense, but it's very watchable, writes BRIAN VINER

www.dailymail.co.uk, July 18, 2024
BRIAN VINER: I did some more laughing out loud during Twisters, so strenuously blow-hard are the efforts to turn the weather into what amounts to a monster movie. The killer tornadoes ripping through Oklahoma are plainly the equivalents of Godzilla or alien invaders or the Great White in Jaws, especially as nobody, not even crack meteorologist Kate Cooper (Normal People's Daisy Edgar-Jones ), seeks to explain them as, just possibly, a consequence of climate change. That said, Lee Isaac Chung's film thunders along with impressive verve and energy as Kate, seeking redemption following a tragedy five years earlier by attempting to show that tornadoes can actually be shrunk by scientific intervention, hooks up with a charismatic self-styled 'tornado-wrangler' called Tyler Owens (Glen Powell).
