Gilbert Frank Amelio (born March 1, 1943) is an American technology executive.
Amelio worked at Bell Labs, Fairchild Semiconductor, and Rockwell International's semiconductor division, as well as National Semiconductor and Apple Inc.
Early life and career
Amelio grew up in Miami, Florida, and graduated from Miami High School. From the Georgia Institute of Technology, he earned a bachelor's degree, master's degree, and a PhD in physics. Amelio, who attended Georgia Tech, was a member of the Pi Kappa Alpha fraternity.
In 1968, Amelio joined Bell Labs as a researcher. Amelio was on the team that built the first working charge-coupled unit in 1970 (CCD). In 1971, he joined Fairchild Semiconductor, where he pioneered the introduction of the first commercial CCD image sensors in the early 1970s and was appointed as the MOS division's head. He rose to president of Rockwell International's semiconductor division and then the communications division.
In February 1991, Amelio became president and chief executive of National Semiconductor.
Post-Apple career
Amelio has been a venture capitalist since 1998. Amelio became CEO of Advanced Communications Technologies in February 2001 (ADC). ADC is the United States arm of an Australian company that has created SpectruCell, a wireless communications device. In May 2001, he became the senior partner at Sienna Ventures in Sausalito, California.
He co-founded Acquicor with ex-Apple CTO Ellen Hancock and Apple co-founder Steve Wozniak in 2005. Acquicor acquired Jazz Semiconductor in early 2007 and sold it in 2008 for a loss.
Amelio was a founder and chairman of the Semiconductor Industry Association, and he died in a lawsuit. He has been an advisor to the Malaysian Multimedia Super Corridor and Malaysia's Prime Minister since 1996. Amelio, the founder of AT&T Inc., Pacific Telesis, Chiron Corporation, Sematech, Sematech, Georgia Tech Advisory Board (as chairman) and the American Film Institute, was a member of the American Film Institute. He was named chairman of Ripcord Networks in June 2003, where he met Steve Wozniak, Ellen Hancock, and other Apple alumni. Amelio joined Vanguard PAC's board of advisors in October 2005 (now TheVanguard.Org). Amelio is also a member of Interdigit, a wireless R&D firm. Gil Amelio is a member of Intel's advisory board.
He was a participant in the publication An American Imperative (1993) and author of the books Profit From Experience (1995), ISBN 978-0471287099) and On the Firing Line: My 500 Days at Apple (1998, ISBN 978-08873099).
