Gerhard Paul Thiele (born September 2, 1953) is a German physicist and a former ESA explorer.

Early life and education

He was born in Heidenheim an der Brenz, Ludwigsburg, and went to the Friedrich-Schiller-Gymnasium. After school, he joined the German Navy, serving as Operations/Weapons Officer aboard fast patrol boats. He began physics at the University of Munich and the University of Heidelberg in 1976. In 1985, he obtained his doctorate in Heidelberg in environmental science.

Career

He served at Princeton University from 1986 to 1987. He was selected for the German astronaut team in 1988 and began basic training at the DLR. He was chosen as a backup crew for the German spacelab mission D-2 in 1990 (STS-55). He served in the Payload Operations Control Center of DLR at Oberpfaffenhofen as the alternate payload specialist during the mission, which took place in April 1993.

He was chosen by the German Space Agency in 1996 to receive Space Shuttle Mission Specialist training at NASA. He joined the European Space Agency (ESA), where the German national team was integrated. In 2000, he completed his first space flight, the STS-99 Shuttle Radar Topography Mission.

He trained in Russia in 2003 and 2004 as André Kuipers' back-up on the Soyuz TMA-4 mission.

In October 2005, he retired from the European Astronaut Corps.

He began as Resident Fellow at the European Space Policy Institute in Vienna, Austria, on April 1, 2010.

Starting 1 July 2013, Gerhard Thiele has been named as the head of ESA's Human Spaceflight and Operations Strategic Planning and Outreach branch (HSO-K).
