George Papashvily Life

Life

George Papashvily and his younger brother David were farmers in the village of Kobiaantkari, Dusheti District, Mtskheta-Mtianeti region of Georgia then under the House of Romanov's rule. Papashvily apprenticed as a swordmaker and ornamental leatherworker in his autobiographical first book. He returned to the newly independent Democratic Republic of Georgia after being a sniper with the Imperial Russian Army during World War I. Papashviliy served in the Georgian Army under General Giorgi Kvinitadze's command against the 1921 Red Army invasion and the Soviet annexation of his country, he fled to Istanbul, Turkey, where he lived for two years. Papashvily immigrated to the United States circa 1923-1924 and spent the remainder of his life there. Papashvily served both as a sculptor and as an author; he also served as a gifted engineer and entrepreneur.

When she was running a bookstore in Berkeley, California, Papashvily met Helen Waite in 1930. They married in 1933. George and Helen, after a brief stint in New York City, bought a farm and settled in Quakertown, Pennsylvania. The Papashvilys wrote several books together, many based on their personal experiences. Anything Can Happen was their first book, which humbly recalled Papashvi's experience as a penniless immigrant. This book was originally published in a serialized format in Common Ground and Direction magazines and was a best-seller, selling more than 600,000 copies in the United States and 1.5 million globally. It was also translated into 15 foreign languages, including Georgian (in 1966). Papashvily died in 1978 in Cambria, California.
