Dad loved nothing more than talking football... and he is STILL the last Scotland manager to win a match at a major tournament

FOR John Brown, Scotland defeats were always painful, in more ways than one.
An Ayr United supporter from Prestwick, patriotic pride was less of a problem than his father Craig managing the national team. Deluged with well-intentioned tactical advice on where his old man was going wrong, he learned to do one of two things. Hold his tongue or join in.
'I've followed the national team as a footsoldier in the Tartan Army over the years,' he tells Mail Sport ahead of the first anniversary of his dad's death at the age of 82. 'I remember one game away in Belgium (in 2001) where we didn't turn up and lost 2-0. A friend of a friend was giving it: "His tactics were all wrong".
Spoonbend it like Beckham! Uri Geller to use his mystic powers to spur Scotland to Euro 2024 victory nearly 30 years after he ruined their chances at Euro 96

The infamous spoon-pest, 77, historically sparked fury from Scots fans when he moved the ball as Gary McAllister ran up to take a crucial penalty against England in at Wembley - that would have made the score 1-1. But the mystifier says that he has received tens of thousands of hate letters - but he says the nation have now rallied behind him and he and even claimed supporters are now descending on Munich in kit bearing his name. And his feelings of guilt for meddling in the past are now spurring him on to join the Tartan Army - and he says he will be wearing a tartan shirt as he supports them from his museum in Tel Aviv.
Gary McAllister tells former Liverpool team-mate Danny Murphy why Scotland can get the monkey off their backs to make history at Euro 2024... and tips rivals England for success

Talk about timing. When I arranged to catch up with my old pal Gary McAllister on Tuesday evening, I didn't imagine Scotland would be smashing England about at cricket's T20 World Cup. Fortunately for me, rain saved England from further embarrassment. Judging by the smile on Gary's face, he enjoyed seeing me squirm. 'If we can beat you at cricket, that's remarkable,' he said. 'Not that we played much growing up in Lanarkshire!' The Euros are more familiar territory. Scotland kick off the tournament against hosts Germany on Friday night hoping to qualify from their group for the first time ever.

Liverpool face Fulham on Sunday and have little time to dwell on their anguish, with 'six cups finals' ahead of them as Gary McAllister put it. The Reds beat Atalanta 1-0 on Thursday night but it wasn't enough to overturn their 3-0 deficit after a horrific performance at Anfield last week in the first leg.
DANNY MURPHY: Marcus Rashford can only be made to see the light by Erik ten Hag, the player must face the consequences for poor results and poor attitudes

DANNY MURPHY: I had positive role models at Liverpool like Gary McAllister and Sami Hyypia, but the manager, Gerard Houllier, had the most influence by far. He may annihilate you and make you feel a million dollars on the same day. Steven Gerrard and Jamie Carragher both deserve praise for their long careers, as I do. Marcus Rashford and Manchester United seem to have a blast with someone like Houllier.
RESULTATED: For the first time since 1995, Premier League'make a call on the game primed to be played on Christmas Eve', with clubs and TV broadcasters deciding the festive fixtures today

Chelsea's Premier League match against Wolves is expected to take place on Christmas Eve in what will be the first game played in the top flight in nearly 30 years. Molineux's fixture is currently scheduled to take place over the weekend of December 23, but it could be postponed due to television cancellations. The fixtures are dispersed throughout the week's Saturday and Sunday, though games do continue on Monday night and Friday night.
Spoon-bender Uri Geller claims credit for Lioness Mary Earps' heroic penalty save against Spain in World Cup final (but clearly his powers didn't help England win)

Uri Geller, the infamous mystifier, 76, paid tribute to the pitch by focusing his mind on the pitch as he watched on a screen in his Tel Aviv museum, nearly 9,000 miles from the Australian stadium. It's been nearly 30 years since the cutlery-botherer says he moved the ball from player Gary McAllister's foot during the European Championship in 1996, causing him to miss a critical penalty against England. However, he could not influence the final outcome of the match because he was traveling with a group of children at the time of the game and could not fully concentrate.
After being relegated from the Premier League, Leeds fans chant, "You're not fit to wear the shirt."

Fans of Leeds United's time in the Premier League came to an end on Sunday. With a 4-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur at Elland Road, the club's destiny was sealed, although wins for Leicester City and Everton would have pushed Leeds to the second tier despite their own results. The Yorkshire side was promoted back to the Premier League in 2020 and stayed in the Premier League for three years, finishing 19th in this season's Premier League campaign.
After giving a talk to Leeds players ahead of a survival shootout, Gordon Strachan fired up
www.dailymail.co.uk,

ACTION BY IAN LADYMAN: Gordon Strachan did not hesitate when Sam Allardyce called, he didn't hesitate. So, on Friday afternoon, the former Leeds captain and league champion found himself home from Elland Road, wishing for a miracle. This week, psychology has been at play in Leeds, Leicester, and Everton. It's been one of the longest and most unique football seasons that any of us have ever knew, it's been decided on a final-day shootout for survival. Both must be discarded. Only one will live. Allardyce has dug deep into his bag of tricks at Leeds. Both his players have been training at Elland Road all week as it is where they will face Tottenham Hotspur. In addition to Strachan, who won the Old First Division with Leeds in 1992, the interim manager has called on two other players of yore, Gary McAllister, and Eddie Gray.
After losing a penalty and being dismissed in Newcastle, Pundits pile in on Leeds' Junior Firpo

The game ended 2-2 at Elland Road, but it may have been a home win if Sam Allardyce's side missed a penalty and gave away two, both of which were scored by Callum Wilson. Firpo was particularly bad in the game, as his second half hand ball within the city allowed Newcastle to take the lead. He was then shown his second yellow card in case of a late challenge just outside the box, requiring the hosts to complete the final seven minutes with only 10 men on the field. Firpo's handball was a result of the pressure the relegation-thraught team found themselves under. Gary McAllister, who played almost 300 games for Leeds and won the league with them in 1992, believes Firpo's handball was a result of the pressure they were under.
Leeds consider Nuno Espirito Santo and Steven Gerrard in their search for a new manager

February 13, 2023
After the new contender, former Ajax boss Alfred Schenley, was ruled out of contention, Leeds United's hunt for a manager continued on Monday night. As the club determines whether an interim appointment until the end of the season is the correct option of proceeding, interviews are ongoing with a variety of candidates. Nuno Espirito Santo of Al-Itttihad is one of the few people pushed forward, although Steven Gerrard's availability, as well as former Leeds fan Gary McAllister, has been noted, although the former Villa boss is said to have reservations.
Michael Beale insists there is 'NO CHANCE' of him replacing Steven Gerrard at Aston Villa
www.dailymail.co.uk,
October 23, 2022
Michael Beale, the Queens Park Rangers' manager, has categorically ruled out a return to Aston Villa, stating that there is 'no chance' of him returning to the job due to his loyalty to Steven Gerrard. Following his humiliating loss to Fulham before his backroom staff, Gary McAllister, Neil Critchley, Tom Culshaw, Jordan Milsom, and Scott Mason all followed him out of the club this week. Beale was assistant to the former England midfielder at Villa Park last season before taking over his first managerial role at Loftus Road in the summer, where he has led QPR to the top of the Championship table.
Steven Gerrard has been shot and fired as the boss of Aston Villa
www.dailymail.co.uk,

TOM COLLOMOSSE Steven Gerrard has been fired by Aston Villa after his team's humiliating 3-0 loss at Fulham. With talks between intermediaries, the former England captain was dismissed just 11 months after replacing Dean Smith at Villa Park. Villa's next game is at home to Brentford on Sunday, and it is uncertain who will take charge, although Villa may elect former player Gary McAllister, who was part of Gerrard's coaching staff, is expected to take over. Supporters had long reacted angrily against Gerrard and chastised him during the rumbling at Craven Cottage, with full knowledge of members of the Villa hierarchy who were in the directors' box.
