Frida Leider Life

Frida Leider (April 18, 1888 to 1975) was a German opera singer. Leider was one of the twentieth century's most popular dramatic sopranos.

Wagner's Isolde and Brünnhilde, Beethoven's Fidelio, Mozart's Donna Anna, and Verdi's Aida and Leonora were among her most popular roles.

She made over 80 recordings, mainly for Polydor and HMV.

Life

Leider was born in Berlin, where she studied singing while working in a bank. Her first appearances led her to opera houses in Halle, Königsberg, and Rostock. She was hired by the Berlin State Opera as the first dramatic soprano after an appearance at the Hamburg State Opera in 1923. She remained on stage as the artistic director and boss of a studio for the rising singers of Berlin State Opera after her retirement from the stage in 1946.

Leider appeared regularly at the Royal Opera House in London, Covent Garden in London, at the Metropolitan Opera in Milan, and at the State Operas of Vienna and Munich. In the 1930s, she appeared at the Bayreuth Festival for the second time. She alternated Wagnerian roles with Florence Austral at Covent Garden in the 1920s, and the two performed significant portions of The Ring for HMV.

Rudolf Deman, Berlin's first concert master, married Leider. There were no children at the time. She died in Berlin, Germany, where she had lived.

The Frida-Leider-Gesellschaft, which is headquartered in Berlin, is now managing the singer's estate.
