Property magnate Patrice Pastor has spent $100 million buying more than a dozen iconic homes and locations in the picturesque village of Carmel-by-the-Sea. But he has won over state regulators with his promise to allow visits at the 2.5-acre outcrop occupied by the now-closed Rocky Point Restaurant 10 miles down the coast on Highway 1. 'This coastline is one of the true treasures of California, with breathtaking and fabulously dramatic views,' said Lisa Haage of the California Coastal Commission.

The race is on to build the world's first ever mile-high building. It would be almost twice the size of the Burj Khalifa - the current tallest construction in the world - and four times the size of the Empire State Building. And the difference in air pressure means going from the bottom to top would be the equivalent of a visitor entering New York and two minutes later exiting at the top of Denver. Yet, despite a multitude of financial and logistical concerns, a fascinating new book explains how such mega skyscrapers could soon be the norm. In an extract from his book Cities in the Sky: The Quest to Build the World's Tallest Skyscrapers, Jason M Barr breaks down the future of city skylines across the globe...

Michael Wyetzner, a NYC architect, gave the inside scoop on why classic diners in America have such a similar appearance. In a video for Architectural Digest, Michielli + Wyetzner Architects' co-owners debunk the story of the phenomenon. Do you mourn the death of the dining room?No place at home is more representative of our rituals
www.dailymail.co.uk,
August 12, 2022
The dining room in my childhood home was a hallowed space. Its door was almost always closed, and we ate as a family only on specific occasions and occasionally on Sunday lunch. Our parents would otherwise use it for their dinner parties, nights, and nights when we'd go to bed to the sound of their muffled chat and merriment, as well as the stench of cigar smoke. We children ate regular meals in what was then called the breakfast room, a tiny space with a Formica table next to the kitchen that was connected by a hatch in the wall through which food was passed. I do recall, however, how exciting it would be to find myself sitting at a table polished to a mirror shine, damask napkin on the lap, and legs swinging from the chair, playing at being a grown up. Compare the life of a dining room to today's popular lifestyle: the open-plan kitchen-diner, whose success has practically banned the unused space of a dining room from family homes. According to Rightmove's website, the number of houses for auction with separate dining rooms has decreased by 28% since 2012. In comparison, the number of its property listings promoting open-plan living has increased by 75% in the last decade.
