Armies of zombie addicts, spiralling death rates and once vibrant streets turned into no-go zones: JONATHAN BROCKLEBANK looks at the terrifying glimpse of what really happens when Portland abandons the war on drugs and how Glasgow could follow
www.dailymail.co.uk,
October 12, 2024
It could have been a post-apocalyptic scene. Shoeless figures lay in a heap on the pavement while others, barely conscious, were slumped in shop doorways. Every few yards along the street, another pitiful sight of humanity laid low by a dismal scourge. Those still moving looked zombified. Those face-down at the side of the road looked dead. Possibly some were. This was downtown Portland, Oregon, last year, learning the hard way what becomes of a city which takes a supposedly 'progressive' approach to solving its drug abuse problem.

Democrat Pennsylvania state representative Malcolm Kenyatta tried to use the common term after an audience member said the phrase in their statement. Shocked host Fiona Bruce interrupted the person in the crowd, saying: 'I'm not sure I've heard that word on Question Time before but it's a first', while someone else shouted: 'Welcome to America' in response. Later on the programme, Malcolm had a go at using the term.

'I was patched up with a white bandage and a black plastic mould fastened with blue tape', she tells The Spectator. Words fail me.'
Fake Or Fortune review: Vintage guitar would fetch a fortune, if only the Stones could remember it, writes CHRISTOPEHER STEVENS
www.dailymail.co.uk,
October 10, 2024
CHRISTOPHER STEPHENS: What price Satisfaction? Somewhere in the vaults of a Swiss collector there's a Les Paul electric guitar purchased by Keith Richards in 1964 and played on the Stones' No. 1 hit. Estimates put the instrument's value at $1million minimum, though no one's sure how Keef came to part with the guitar, and the band's management say they'd like it back, please. Figures like that suggest the sheet-metal guitar investigated on Fake Or Fortune, rumoured to have belonged to Stones bandmate Ronnie Wood , could be worth more than even presenters Philip Mould and Fiona Bruce (seen on Thursday's episode with Chesney Hawkes) suspected.

ALISON BOSHOFF: Jealous Huw Edwards was 'poison' in BBC news room, claim ex-colleagues
www.dailymail.co.uk,
August 9, 2024
ALISON BOSHOFF: Highly-paid Huw Edwards, (left) 62, would complain bitterly in private about the pay cut he was forced to take in 2018, following a row over gender pay inequality. One issue which rankled was his belief that colleague Fiona Bruce (right) hugely outearned him - and that this was not reflected in the BBC Annual Report, the most recent of which showed he was paid between £475,000 and £479,999, while she was paid £405,000 to £409,999. However Bruce's earnings for shows like Question Time, Antiques Roadshow and Fake Or Fortune were not taken into account - because they are made by the BBC's commercial arm, BBC Studios. Edwards reckoned that all told, Bruce earned a cool million - twice as much as him - and he would point out he also did state events and elections for that money.
BBC shock jock Stephen Nolan remains corporation's fifth highest paid presenter on £450,000 - a year after apologising for 'sharing explicit images of shamed reality star Stephen Bear'
www.dailymail.co.uk,
July 23, 2024
BBC's Stephen Nolan remains the corporation's fifth highest paid presenter on £450,000, a year after he apologised over lewd sexual messages. According to the annual report published today, Nolan was paid between £405,000 and £409,999 directly from the licence fee in the last year - the same amount as news presenter Fiona Bruce. Nolan's wages - paid for presenting on BBC Radio Ulster, 5 Live and Nolan Live on BBC Northern Ireland - do not include what he earns for other programmes made for the BBC by his independent production company. He allegedly sent the image of reality TV star Stephen Bear's penis to colleagues in 2016 while he was trying to get them to book the disgraced celebrity as a guest on his TV show, Nolan Live. Pictured right is a scene when Bear came on the show. Bear, a former Celebrity Big Brother winner, was jailed for 21 months earlier that year after being convicted of revenge porn and voyeurism.
Do you live 'for now' or prioritise the future? Why having money doesn't necessarily mean you can afford to spend it
www.dailymail.co.uk,
July 14, 2024
There are times when the answer is very clear - if you don't have enough money in the bank to pay for something, you can't afford it. But if you're fortunate enough to not have every penny allocated, the answer is much knottier. The challenge is balancing a tangible purchase in the present (the jacket) with something hypothetical in the future
RICHARD LITTLEJOHN: With Ken's audience booming and Fiona's tanking… did the BBC ditch the wrong Bruce?
www.dailymail.co.uk,
July 11, 2024
You know you're getting old when you find yourself listening to Radio 2 and you think it's Radio 1. That was the standing joke 50-odd years ago when disc jockeys like David ' Diddy ' Hamilton, Jimmy Young and Alan 'Fluff' Freeman were transferred from 'Won-der-ful Ray-de-O One!' to pipe-and-slippers Radio 2. Not 'arf. Back then, the stalwarts at 2 were leftovers from the days when the station was known as the Light Programme - legendary broadcasters such as David 'Juke Box Jury' Jacobs and Jack Jackson, the 'Housewives' Choice', who joined the BBC in 1931.

Michael Aspel has lifted the lid on his axing as the host of Antiques Roadshow after seven years in 2008, claiming it was as a result of his age. BBC warned it will 'infuriate millions' if it does not let Nigel Farage debate Keir Starmer in the wake of the Reform party's polling success
www.dailymail.co.uk,
June 15, 2024
The BBC has been warned it will 'infuriate millions' if it does not let Nigel Farage debate Keir Starmer in the wake of the Reform party's polling success. In a letter to the national broadcaster Richard Tice demanded a head-to-head between the opposing leaders and insisted that Farage also be added to the BBC's four-way leaders' debate panel, which Fiona Bruce will host in York next Thursday. He cited a recent YouGov poll as evidence to the public demand for his party. It stated that of 2,211 adults in Britain surveyed on Wednesday and Thursday, Reform UK would win 19 per cent, putting them ahead of the Conservatives on 18 per cent. A BBC spokesman did not rule out the possibility of Mr Farage being added to the roster, saying they would follow 'continued trends in the polls'.
Viewers slam BBC's 'embarrassing' geographical blunders after Antiques Roadshow D-Day special confused Weymouth with Poole and put Amsterdam 50 miles out of place
www.dailymail.co.uk,
June 3, 2024
During the hour long episode a series of maps were shown to the audience which showed the ports in the south of England where thousands of Allied troops embarked for Operation Overlord - the codename for the military operation which culminated in the liberation of Europe from Nazi Germany. Weymouth in Dorset played a vital role as more than 100,000 men were staged there ahead of the invasion of Normandy. But, inexplicably, the BBC confused the Georgian harbour town with Poole and placed it 30 miles to the east on its maps. The Beeb also bizarrely relocated Amsterdam 50 miles south to where Rotterdam is on another map.

The injured presenter added: 'I am still alive!'
