Erna Solberg (born 24 February 1961) is a Norwegian politician and Prime Minister of Norway who has been Prime Minister of Norway since 2013 and a member of the Conservative Party since May 2004.
Solberg was first elected to be a member of the Storting in 1989 and served as Minister of Local Government and Regional Development in Bondevik's Second Cabinet from 2001 to 2005, influenced by Margaret Thatcher's "Iron Lady" nickname.
During her tenure, she oversaw both immigration policy tightening and the development of a proposed reform of Norway's administrative divisions.
She chaired the Conservative Party parliamentary group from 2005 to 2013.
Solberg has stressed the societal and ideological foundations of Conservative policies, although the party has also become more pragmatic since winning the September 2013 election.
Solberg's Cabinet, also known as the "Blue-Blue Cabinet" informally, was a two-party minority government made up of the Conservative Party and Progress Party.
In the Storting, the cabinet began formalized cooperation with the Liberal Party and the Christian Democratic Party.
The government was re-elected in the 2017 general election and was expanded to include the Liberal Party in January 2018.
Informally, this vast majority group is referred to as the "Blue-Green cabinet" in the official. Solberg defied Kre Willoch in May 2018 and became Norway's longest serving Prime Minister to represent the Conservative Party.
The Christian Democrats were also included in January 2019 and thereby secured a majority in Parliament.
Early life and education
Solberg was born in Bergen, western Norway, on February 24th, 1960, and grew up in the wealthy Kalfaret neighborhood. Asbjrn Solberg (1925-1989), her father, and mother Inger Wenche Torgersen (1926–2016), were office employees. Both her parents are executives. Solberg has two sisters, one older and one younger.
Solberg had some difficulties in school and was diagnosed with dyslexia at the age of 16. She was also a student contributor and a lively participant. She was elected to the board of the School Student Union of Norway in 1979 and, in the same year, she was involved in the national charity opera Operasjon Dagsverk, in which students collected money for Jamaica.
She earned her candormag in 1986. The University of Bergen has a degree in sociology, political science, statistics, and economics. In her last year, she was the Student' League of the Conservative Party in Bergen.
She has been married to Sindre Finnes, a businessman and former Conservative Party politician with two children, since 1996. Both the family has lived in Bergen and Oslo.
Early political career
Solberg served as a deputy member of Bergen's city council from 1979-1983 to 1989, the last time on the executive committee. She chaired the Young Conservatives and the Conservative Party's local and municipal chapters.
She was first elected to the Storting (Norwegian Parliament) from Hordaland in 1989 and has been re-elected five times. She served as the head of the national Conservative Women's Association from 1994 to 1998.
Solberg, the Minister of Local Government and Regional Development under Prime Minister Kjell Magne Bondevik, served from 2001 to 2005. In the media, her alleged tougher policies in this branch, which included a firm's stand on asylum, earned her the nickname "Jern-Erna" (Norwegian for "Iron Erna).
In fact, statistics reveal that the Bondevik government of 2001–2005 welcomed thousands more asylum seekers than the later centre-left Red-Green government, which was 2005–2009. Solberg suggested the establishment of Islamic Sharia Councils in Norway in 2003 after being informed of the existence of such councils in the United Kingdom, and that, in 2004, she wanted to increase immigration to Norway.
Solberg, the Norwegian Directorate of Immigration, ordered Mulla Krekar to dismiss him as Minister, posing a threat to national security. Later, terrorism charges were lodged against Krekar for a death threat he uttered against Erna Solberg in 2010.
Mordechai Vanunu denied political asylum in order not to jeopardize Israel's relations.
She served as deputy leader of the Conservative Party from 2002 to 2004, and then became party leader in 2004.
