Eric Mowbray Knight (April 10, 1897 – January 15, 1943) was an English novelist and screenwriter who is best known for his 1940 book Lassie Come Home, which introduced the fictional collie Lassie.

He received American citizenship in 1942, just before his death.

Writing career

Invitation to Life, Knight's first book (Greenberg, 1934). Song on Your Bugles (1936) about the working class in Northern England was the second in a series. He wrote the hardboiled thriller "You Play the Black and the Red Comes Up (1938), as "Richard Hallas." This Above All is considered one of the most important books of the Second World War by Knight's This Above All. Under Frank Capra's direction, he also helped with the film Battle of Britain.

In Pleasant Valley, Pennsylvania, the Knight and his second wife, Jere Knight, raised collies. They lived at Springhouse Farm from 1939 to 1943. Lassie Come-Home (ISBN 0030441013) appeared in 1940, expanding from a short story published in The Saturday Evening Post in 1938.

Sam Small Flies Again, one of Knight's last books, was republished as The Flying Yorkshireman by Pocket Books 493, 1948; 273 pages). This blurb appeared on the back of The Flying Yorkshireman:
