Sir Keir Starmer (left), after joining US, French and German leaders on Friday, said the killing of Yahya Sinwar (right) offered an 'opportunity' to step up ceasefire talks that have so far failed to produce a breakthrough. Speaking at a press conference after discussions as part of the so-called 'Quad' of nations, Sir Keir said the 'answer is diplomacy' in resolving the long-running war in Gaza and violence in the wider region. The planned trip to Berlin came after Israel announced on Thursday that its military had killed Hamas leader Mr Sinwar, presenting his death as a turning point in the country's campaign against the group. Contrast that with Britain where similar automotive events struggle to get a flicker of interest from even the most junior ministers. I was close enough to Macron's sharp-suited security detail to smell their eau de cologne and the president was but a few feet away as Renault Group's mercurial CEO Luca de Meo prepared to present his firm's latest wares. So why, when France's political leaders proudly show their amour for the automobile, do UK ministers seem so uninterested - with some openly anti-car?

President Joe Biden will make a 24-hour whirl wind trip to Germany to talk to German Chancellor Olaf Scholz about their countries' support for Ukraine and shore up his ally. The visit is short but has many parts, including a meeting of the European Quad - Biden, Scholz, French President Emmanuel Macron and UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer - to discuss the wars in Ukraine and in the Middle East. 'President Biden will be happy to be able to thank Chancellor Scholz for the incredible partnership that they've had over these last three and a half years. And then in terms of the quad, meaning quad leaders, meaning the United States, the UK, France and Germany will have an opportunity to discuss pressing global issues, including Ukraine, including the Middle East,' a senior administration official told reporters in a briefing on Wednesday.

US threatens to cut off arms supply to Israel: Strongest known warning sent to Netanyahu since war began calls for greater humanitarian aid in Gaza
www.dailymail.co.uk,
October 16, 2024
The US has issued a stark ultimatum to Israel, warning it must relax restrictions on the flow of aid into and around Gaza lest it face being cut off from arms imports. The threat, delivered in a letter penned by US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defence Secretary Lloyd Austin, constitutes Washington's strongest warning to Israel over the worsening humanitarian situation in the Palestine enclave. Washington's top diplomat cited the strict controls Israel is imposing, including 'burdensome and excessive' restrictions on import materials and the denial of most humanitarian movements between northern and southern Gaza. Blinken and Austin demanded concrete action be taken within 30 days, including enabling a minimum of 350 trucks to enter Gaza per day, instituting pauses in fighting to allow aid delivery and rescinding evacuation orders to Palestinian civilians when there is no operational need. It comes at a time when the threat of escalation in the Middle East appears at an all-time high.
Israel launches missile strikes on Beirut for the first time in days, ignoring pressure from the US over its conduct

The country's military aimed the attacks on south Beirut today, after Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu rejected the idea of a ceasefire in Lebanon that would leave Hezbollah close to Israel's border. An AFP journalist saw black smoke billowing between buildings in the capital's Haret Hreik area following two strikes, which hit shortly after an Israeli military order for residents to leave. Mr Netanyahu's vow to keep fighting Hezbollah came as the United States ramped up pressure over Israel's conduct of the wars in Lebanon and Gaza, criticising the recent bombing of Beirut and demanding more aid reach the Palestinian territory. In a call with French President Emmanuel Macron, Mr Netanyahu said he was 'opposed to a unilateral ceasefire, which does not change the security situation in Lebanon, and which will only return it to the way it was', according to a statement from his office.

Emmanuel Macron doesn't want to fix the Channel migrant crisis because he is keen to 'punish' Britain for Brexit, a Tory leadership hopeful claimed today. Robert Jenrick launched the sensational attack on the French President as he bemoaned how the UK 'cannot rely' on its neighbour to stop small boat crossings. The former immigration minister revealed the French leader 'wouldn't give a hearing' to his plan for a 'one-in, one-out' migrant swap deal when he was in the Home Office. His proposal would have seen Britain pay for each illegal migrant returned across the Channel, while the UK would take one asylum seeker from France in exchange. Mr Jenrick presented the plan to former prime minister Rishi Sunak in March last year, but said it was rejected by Mr Macron when offered to France.
