Emilio Butragueño Santos (Spanish pronunciation: [eˈmiljo βutɾaˈɣeɲo ˈsantos]; born 22 July 1963) is a Spanish retired footballer who played as a striker.
He was best known for his spell with Real Madrid. Nicknamed El Buitre (The Vulture), he was a member of the legendary La Quinta del Buitre along with Manolo Sanchís, Rafael Martín Vázquez, Míchel and Miguel Pardeza.
Butragueño amassed La Liga totals 300 games and 123 goals for his main club in 12 seasons, and represented the Spain national team in two World Cups (being the second-top scorer in the 1986 edition) and as many European Championships, scoring 26 goals for his country in a record that stood several years. Club career
Butrague, a Madrid-born boy from 1981, joined Real Madrid's youth system, playing first for their reserves before being given his senior debut by Alfredo Di Stéfano on February 5th, 1984: he made an immediate difference, scoring twice and aiding in the third goal in a 3–0 away victory after Real trailed by 2–0. He made his European competitive debut on December 12th, leading to a 6–1 home victory over R.C. Anderlecht qualified for the third round of the UEFA Cup after losing by 3–0 in Brussels), while the Spaniards went on to win the competition.
Real Madrid's appearance at the time was so uneven that the first team's attendances were lower than those on the reserve team. Butragueo was instrumental in the team's reforms during the 1980s, winning multiple prizes; he earned the European Bronze Award for best footballer in two years; and the Pichichi Trophy in 1991; and two consecutive UEFA Cups.
The team reached the final of the Liga MX in 1996 after losing his place (only eight games and one goal when Real won another league). He retired from the game after three seasons as the Gentleman of the Pitch, but never receiving a single red card during his entire career.
International career
Butragueo played for Spain for 69 caps and scored 26 goals. He made his debut against Wales in a 1986 FIFA World Cup qualifier on October 17, 1984, but he had already been selected as an uncapped player for the country's elite teams, finishing runners-up.
Butrague was also selected for the 1986 World Cup, scoring four goals as Spain defeated Denmark 5–1 in the round-of-16 tournament. He appeared in the 1990 edition in Italy (four games, no goals).
