Elizabeth Welter Wilson (April 4, 1921 – May 9, 2015) was an American actress whose career spanned nearly 70 years, including memorable roles in film and television.

In 1972 she won the Tony Award for Best Featured Actress in a Play for her role in Sticks and Bones.

Wilson was inducted into the American Theatre Hall of Fame in 2006.

Early life

Wilson was born in Grand Rapids, Michigan, the daughter of insurance agent Henry Dunning Wilson and Marie Ethel (née Welter) Wilson. Her maternal grandfather was a wealthy German immigrant, and Wilson was raised in a large mansion. She attended the Barter Theatre in Abingdon, Virginia, and then studied with Sanford Meisner at The Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theatre in New York City.

According to Wilson, she was a lifelong liberal Democrat and she adhered to the Methodist faith.

Wilson was a versatile character actor, appearing in more than 30 films and many Broadway plays. Wilson, the Los Angeles Times' "full and graceful, often played women who had or desired power."

Wilson made her Broadway debut in Picnic in 1953. Desk Set (1955), The Good Woman of Szechuan (1970), Sticks and Bones (1973), Threepenny Opera (1976), Ah, Wilderness (1983). (1988) and A Delicate Balance (1996).

Wilson made her screen debut in Picnic's 1955 film version as Christine Schoenwalder. Patterns (1956), The Goddess (1958), The Birds (1960), A Child In The Woods (1969), The Birds (1973), In This Life (1972), The Addams Family (1991), The Addams Family (1991), The Hundreds (1991), The Unconstitutional (1994), And The Downing (1978), The Prisoner in The Eighties (1976), The Bells (1989), Jenny (1972). The Bell of Love (1976), The Birds (1969), The Devil (2005) Sara Delano Roosevelt, who appeared in Hyde Park on Hudson (2012), was her last film role.

Wilson's television appearances include early anthology series such as Kraft Television Theatre, The United States Steel Hour, and Armstrong Circle Theatre. She appeared in Dark Shadows, The Secret Storm, Another World, She Wrote: Criminal Intent. She was a regular on the primetime drama East Side/West Side and the sitcom Doc, and also in Dark Shadows, The Secret Storm, and Another World. She has appeared in television films, including The Boys Next Door (1996). She appeared in the miniseries Nutcracker: Money, Madness, and Murder in March 1987 as the mother of Frances Schreuder (played by Lee Remick), as well as the miniseries Alex Haley's Queen.

The jealous love rival of teenager Caroline Glachan who was murdered after being pelted with bricks and left to drown has been jailed for at least 17 years. Donna Marie Brand, 44, was one of three people convicted of murdering the 14-year-old more than 27 years ago. She was found guilty in December at the High Court in Glasgow alongside Robert O'Brien, 45 and Andrew Kelly, of killing O'Brien's girlfriend Caroline in August 1996. During 10 days of evidence, the jury heard the trio had arranged to meet Caroline at a bridge near the towpath beside the River Leven, between Renton and Bonhill in West Dunbartonshire, on August 25 that year. Caroline was repeatedly punched and kicked, and had bricks or similar items thrown at her, causing blunt force trauma to her head and body.
