Unrivalled pageantry Day, 1953 - 8,000 dignitaries from around the world crammed into Westminster Abbey to witness Queen Elizabeth II's Coronation. Despite the fact that the event was marred by typical British weather, there was nothing typical about the bejewelled Maids of Honour, international royals displaying all their finery and noble gentry draped in ermine. Glittering crowns, golden carriages, a diamond-encrusted gown, the finest silks - and, of course, the tiaras!
PATRICK MARMION reviews Who's Afraid Of Virginia Woolf?

PATRICK MARMION: Edward Albee's notorious marital slugfest was a long-buried mystery to me. Every performance of his 1962 drama about a middle-aged couple serving each other seven servings of hell seems to be a theatrical task force: an archaeological expedition attempting to solve the mystery's enigma. Elizabeth McGovern (Lady Cora in Downton) and Dougray Scott, the Scottish actor known as Ray Lennox in Irvine Welsh's ITV series Crime, now has the mission in Bath. Martha McGovern plays Martha, the dipso daughter of a wealthy university president. Scott plays her defeated, no less boozy history professor husband. They lured a young, not yet jaundiced couple to participate in their bizarre mind games, in which they taunt and mock each other.
The Ladies of "Downton Abbey" are on display at the Red Carpet Premiere, wearing glittering 1920s gowns

The film's leading stars dressed in their finest 1920s-inspired gowns at London's Cineworld Leicester Square on April 25th. Lady Mary (played by Michelle Dockery) and Myrna Dalgleish (played by Laura Haddock) were among the best dressed, sporting sparkling, sheer-caped designer gowns.
It was easy to see how the ladies of "Downton Abbey" took inspiration from 1920s fashion for their red carpet outfits. The 1920s are often characterized by the glittering, sheer gowns worn by flappers and partygoers in "The Great Gatsby." The stars of "Downton Abbey: A New Era" world premiere wore sparkling and sheer gowns in shades of champagne, gold, silver, gray, and black velvet. Expect a lot of diamanté, feathers, silk and satin fabrics, luxurious black velvet, and oversized bow details. We loved Elizabeth McGovern's multitextured Azzi & Osta gown (who plays Cora Crawley) in addition to Haddock and Dockery.
